The Network Operations Specialist (NOC Specialist) is responsible for ensuring the stability, performance, security, and availability of enterprise network infrastructure. This role monitors, troubleshoots, and remediates network incidents; executes configuration and maintenance tasks; supports change and capacity planning processes; and collaborates with engineering, security, and vendor teams to deliver reliable, scalable network services across on‑premises, remote, and cloud environments. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Monitor 24/7 network infrastructure using enterprise monitoring platforms (SolarWinds, Nagios, Zabbix, Datadog, Splunk, PRTG) to detect outages, performance degradation, or security anomalies, and escalate or remediate per runbooks and SLAs.
  • Triage, prioritize, and resolve production incidents and outages using structured incident response processes; coordinate cross‑functional teams, communicate incident status to stakeholders, and perform post‑incident reviews with root cause analysis and remediation steps.
  • Troubleshoot complex layer 2/layer 3 network issues (VLANs, STP, trunking, IP subnetting, routing loops), leverage packet capture tools (Wireshark, tcpdump) and interface statistics to identify and remediate faults.
  • Configure, maintain, and upgrade enterprise switches and routers (Cisco, Juniper, Arista), including IOS/XE/ Junos upgrades, image management, and configuration backups to ensure consistency and recoverability.
  • Administer WAN technologies (MPLS, Internet VPNs, SD‑WAN), optimize traffic engineering, and work with carriers and managed service providers to troubleshoot service provider incidents and escalate outages.
  • Manage firewall and perimeter security appliances (Cisco ASA/FTD, Palo Alto, Fortinet) for rule changes, policy audits, NAT, VPN terminators, and support security operations to ensure network segmentation and compliance.
  • Provision, monitor, and troubleshoot remote access and VPN services (IPSec, SSL VPN, client VPN), ensuring secure connectivity for remote users and branch locations and enforcing multi‑factor authentication where applicable.
  • Perform network capacity planning and performance tuning, analyze historical usage, forecast growth, recommend upgrades or architecture changes, and support budgeting for network expansions.
  • Maintain load balancers and application delivery controllers (F5, Citrix ADC), including health checks, pool configuration, SSL offloading, and troubleshooting application connectivity or session issues.
  • Execute scheduled maintenance windows and coordinated change management activities; prepare rollback plans, update configuration management databases, and ensure minimal service disruption.
  • Support and maintain wireless LAN infrastructure (Cisco Meraki, Aruba, Ruckus), monitor RF performance, troubleshoot client connectivity issues, and assist with site surveys and capacity planning.
  • Manage IP address space, DHCP, DNS operations (Windows Server DNS, BIND, Infoblox), and keep network inventory and documentation current to reduce mean time to resolution.
  • Maintain and execute backup/restore procedures for network device configurations and ensure disaster recovery readiness for critical network elements.
  • Implement and maintain network monitoring alarms, synthetic transactions, and dashboards to proactively detect degradation, define thresholds, and reduce incident windows.
  • Automate recurring operational tasks using scripting (Python, Bash, PowerShell) and configuration management tools (Ansible, Terraform) to improve repeatability and reduce human error.
  • Enforce network change control policies and collaborate with security, compliance, and application teams to ensure changes meet governance and audit requirements.
  • Participate in on‑call rotations, respond to after‑hours incidents, and perform urgent troubleshooting and remediation under SLA constraints.
  • Coordinate vendor relationships and escalate hardware, software or service issues to vendors, manage RMA processes, and validate fixes or replacements.
  • Prepare operational runbooks, standard operating procedures (SOPs), topology diagrams, and knowledge base articles to enable efficient triage and handoffs across shifts.
  • Test and validate firmware and configuration changes in lab or staging environments before production deployment to reduce risk and avoid regressions.
  • Support VoIP and UC troubleshooting (SIP, RTP, QoS), ensuring voice quality and addressing jitter, latency, and packet loss issues impacting phone systems.
  • Support cloud networking tasks for hybrid environments (AWS VPC, Azure Virtual Network, GCP), including routing, peering, transit gateways, security groups and troubleshooting interconnectivity issues.
  • Monitor and enforce Quality of Service (QoS) policies across WAN and LAN to prioritize voice, video, and critical business applications and optimize user experience.
  • Participate in architecture and project teams to provide operational perspective for new network deployments, migrations, upgrades, and integrations.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain and enhance the network documentation library, runbooks and topology diagrams for on‑call and project handover.
  • Provide Tier 2/3 escalation support for field technicians and junior NOC staff; mentor and train new team members on monitoring tools and escalation procedures.
  • Execute quarterly or annual capacity and resiliency reviews and present actionable findings to IT leadership for budgeting and roadmap planning.
  • Assist in vendor procurement evaluations, RFP responses, and technical comparisons to support purchasing decisions.
  • Lead or participate in disaster recovery and business continuity testing for network services, documenting outcomes and remediation plans.
  • Build and refine automation playbooks (Ansible, Python scripts) to reduce manual steps for common configuration changes and incident responses.
  • Generate recurring operational reports (uptime, incident trends, MTTR, capacity metrics) and produce insights that drive continuous improvement.
  • Support compliance activities (PCI, SOC2, HIPAA as applicable) by providing network logs, evidence of configuration control, and access reviews.
  • Facilitate cross‑team workshops with application owners, security, and infrastructure to align on SLAs, maintenance windows and deployment cadences.
  • Evaluate and pilot new network technologies (SDN, intent‑based networking, SASE) and provide recommendations based on operational readiness and ROI.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of TCP/IP, routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP), switching (VLANs, STP), and WAN technologies (MPLS, Internet, SD‑WAN).
  • Hands‑on experience with enterprise networking hardware and OSes: Cisco (IOS, IOS-XE), Juniper (Junos), Arista, Meraki and familiarity with vendor CLI and GUI tools.
  • Practical experience configuring and managing firewalls, NGFWs and VPNs (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA/FTD) and applying security policies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate's degree or equivalent technical diploma in Computer Networking, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent hands‑on experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Network Engineering, Telecommunications, or related discipline.
  • Relevant industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, Juniper JNCIA/JNCIS, CompTIA Network+/Security+, Palo Alto PCNSE, or cloud certs (AWS/Azure networking).
