Core Responsibilities

As the technical expert for network operations, your day-to-day activities are diverse and impactful. You'll be at the forefront of problem-solving and network optimization.

Primary Functions

  • Provide advanced technical support and hands-on troubleshooting for complex enterprise network environments, including LAN, WAN, WLAN, SD-WAN, and data center networks.
  • Act as an escalation point for the IT service desk, taking ownership of network-related incidents and service requests from identification through to resolution.
  • Monitor network performance and integrity using enterprise-class tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, PRTG, Datadog) to ensure high availability and proactively address potential issues before they impact business operations.
  • Install, configure, and maintain network hardware, including routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and access points from vendors like Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and Palo Alto Networks.
  • Perform regular network maintenance, including patching, firmware upgrades, and configuration backups, often during scheduled off-hours maintenance windows to minimize disruption.
  • Manage and troubleshoot routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF to ensure optimal and redundant path selection across the corporate network.
  • Configure and support site-to-site and client VPN technologies (IPSec, SSL VPN) to ensure secure remote connectivity for employees and business partners.
  • Respond to, investigate, and mitigate network security alerts, working closely with the cybersecurity team to enforce security policies on network devices.
  • Manage firewall rule sets and access control lists (ACLs) to segment traffic and protect critical network resources in accordance with security best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues for end-users, servers, and applications, utilizing packet capture and analysis tools like Wireshark.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to provide immediate support for critical, service-impacting network outages.
  • Analyze network traffic patterns and resource utilization to assist in capacity planning and recommend upgrades or architectural changes.
  • Implement and manage Quality of Service (QoS) policies to prioritize critical application traffic, such as VoIP and video conferencing.
  • Work directly with telecommunication providers and vendors to report and resolve circuit-related issues and outages.

Secondary Functions

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for network architecture, configurations, disaster recovery plans, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Participate in the evaluation and implementation of new network technologies and solutions to enhance performance, security, and scalability.
  • Assist senior engineers and architects with the design and deployment of new network infrastructure for office expansions, relocations, or technology refreshes.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and guidance to junior support staff and other IT team members on network-related topics and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams, including systems administrators, security analysts, and application developers, to resolve cross-functional technical issues.
  • Manage the inventory and lifecycle of all network equipment, including asset tracking and planning for end-of-life replacements.

  • Firewall Management: Hands-on experience with next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) such as Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, or Cisco ASA, including policy creation, NAT, and threat prevention.
  • TCP/IP Suite: A fundamental, in-depth knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol suite, including DNS, DHCP, and IP subnetting.
  • Network Monitoring & Analysis: Proficiency with network monitoring systems (e.g., SolarWinds NPM, PRTG) and packet analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark).
  • VPN Technologies: Strong experience with configuring and troubleshooting site-to-site IPSec tunnels and remote access SSL VPNs.
  • Wireless Networking: Solid understanding of enterprise Wi-Fi standards (802.11ac/ax), security protocols (WPA2/3-Enterprise), and management of wireless LAN controllers (WLCs).
  • SD-WAN Concepts: Familiarity with Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) technologies and their operational benefits.
  • Scripting & Automation: Basic ability to use scripting languages like Python or PowerShell to automate repetitive network tasks is highly desirable.
