Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Operate teleprompter systems with precision during live and pre-taped news broadcasts, ensuring perfect synchronization with on-air talent.
- Prepare, print, and meticulously organize all broadcast scripts for anchors, reporters, and the production control room, managing updates and revisions in real-time.
- Conduct thorough and rapid research on breaking news stories, current events, and background information to support scriptwriting and segment development.
- Assist producers and assignment editors in fact-checking scripts, on-screen graphics (chyron), and other broadcast elements for accuracy and clarity.
- Coordinate and manage the logistics for in-studio guests, including scheduling arrival times, handling releases, and ensuring they are prepared for their on-air segments.
- Monitor news wires, social media feeds, and competing broadcasts to identify breaking stories and provide timely updates to the editorial team.
- Support field crews by preparing equipment, coordinating transportation, and serving as a communication link between the field and the newsroom.
- Log incoming video feeds from the field and other sources, noting key soundbites, visuals, and timecodes for producers and editors.
- Provide direct, personal assistance to news anchors, including managing their schedules, preparing briefing materials, and anticipating their needs before, during, and after broadcasts.
- Collaborate with the graphics department to request and verify on-screen visuals, lower-thirds, and other graphic elements for news stories.
- Answer viewer phone calls and emails, addressing their concerns and questions professionally and routing information to the appropriate department.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with the writing and posting of news content, photos, and videos to the station's website and social media platforms.
- Provide support in the video editing process, including basic editing of clips for broadcast or digital use under the guidance of an editor or producer.
- Maintain and organize the newsroom's digital and physical archives, including scripts, tapes, and digital files, for future reference.
- Contribute story ideas and unique angles during daily editorial meetings, demonstrating a keen understanding of our audience and news landscape.
- Run errands essential for newsroom operations, such as picking up supplies or delivering materials between departments.
- Shadow producers, directors, and reporters to gain a comprehensive understanding of all roles within the news production workflow.
- Manage the distribution of rundowns and scripts to all necessary personnel, including master control and audio technicians.
- Prepare and maintain the on-air studio environment, ensuring it is clean, organized, and ready for broadcast.
- Act as a stand-in for anchors and reporters during camera blocking and lighting rehearsals to assist the technical crew.
