Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Capture high-quality, compelling, and creative still photographs and video for a wide range of news stories, ensuring content is suitable for broadcast, digital, and social media platforms.
- Respond immediately and safely to breaking news scenes, often working under high-pressure conditions to document events accurately as they unfold.
- Collaborate closely with reporters, producers, and the assignment desk to develop story ideas, plan visual execution, and ensure a cohesive narrative.
- Expertly edit video and still photos using non-linear editing systems (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Edius) to meet strict, daily deadlines for on-air and online publication.
- Operate and maintain a diverse range of professional equipment, including ENG/EFP cameras, DSLR/mirrorless cameras, lighting kits, microphones, and mobile editing gear.
- Establish and operate live shots using bonded cellular technology (LiveU/Dejero) and microwave/satellite trucks to transmit video from remote field locations.
- Conduct interviews with subjects, gathering clear audio and compelling sound bites that add depth and emotion to visual reports.
- Exercise strong journalistic judgment and adhere to the highest ethical standards, ensuring all visual reporting is fair, accurate, and contextually appropriate.
- Proactively pitch enterprise story ideas with strong visual potential, contributing original content that differentiates our news coverage.
- Work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and be available on-call to respond to news events at a moment's notice.
- Maintain and operate a company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner, ensuring it is stocked and ready for assignments.
- Employ advanced lighting techniques in the field and in-studio to create visually appealing shots and interviews, even in challenging lighting conditions.
- Creatively frame and compose shots to produce visually interesting and emotionally resonant sequences that enhance the storytelling.
- Write clear, concise, and accurate captions and metadata for all photographic and video assets, ensuring proper archival and searchability.
- Operate Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones) to capture unique aerial perspectives for news coverage, adhering strictly to FAA regulations and safety protocols.
Secondary Functions
- Assist the digital team by preparing and publishing visual content directly to the station's website and social media channels.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior photographers, interns, and multimedia journalists within the newsroom.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on assigned equipment to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness.
- Participate actively in daily editorial meetings, contributing to discussions on coverage plans and visual strategy.
- Stay informed on emerging technologies, visual trends, and new storytelling techniques to continuously innovate and improve craft.
- Manage assignment-related logistics, including coordinating access to locations and maintaining awareness of potential safety hazards.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficiency in operating professional video cameras (ENG), DSLRs, and mirrorless camera systems.

- Skill in photo editing and management with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.
- Demonstrated ability to set up and operate live transmission equipment (e.g., LiveU, Dejero, microwave trucks).
