Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive and continuous research to identify, cultivate, and qualify new government, foundation, and corporate funding prospects that align with the organization's strategic priorities and program areas.
  • Develop, manage, and meticulously maintain a detailed grants calendar to track all application and reporting deadlines, ensuring timely submission of all required materials.
  • Author, edit, and assemble highly persuasive, well-researched, and compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry (LOIs), and funding applications tailored to the specific interests and requirements of each funder.
  • Collaborate proactively with program managers, finance staff, and executive leadership to gather essential information, including programmatic outcomes, success stories, evaluation data, and organizational statistics for proposals.
  • Create and develop comprehensive project budgets and budget narratives in close partnership with the finance department, ensuring all financial information is accurate, justified, and aligned with the proposed activities.
  • Manage the full life cycle of grant submissions, from initial drafting and internal reviews to final packaging and submission through various online portals and platforms, ensuring 100% compliance with funder guidelines.
  • Maintain a deep and current understanding of the organization’s mission, vision, history, programs, and strategic plan to articulate its impact and needs with passion and precision.
  • Synthesize complex information, such as logic models, theories of change, and evaluation data, into clear, accessible, and inspiring narratives for a diverse range of philanthropic audiences.
  • Lead the internal coordination of all grant application components, ensuring that all supplementary materials (e.g., financial statements, board lists, letters of support) are collected and prepared on schedule.
  • Draft and submit timely, accurate, and insightful interim and final reports to funders, effectively demonstrating the impact of their investment and ensuring compliance with all grant agreements.
  • Maintain a pristine and organized system of record for all grant-related activities, including submissions, awards, declinations, and reporting, within the organization's CRM or donor database (e.g., Salesforce, Raiser's Edge).
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with foundation program officers and corporate giving contacts through clear, professional, and strategic communication before and after submission.
  • Lead internal "kick-off" meetings upon receiving a new grant award to ensure all key staff members understand the project goals, deliverables, reporting timelines, and compliance requirements.
  • Interpret complex and often lengthy grant application guidelines, RFPs (Requests for Proposals), and federal regulations to ensure every aspect of an application is fully compliant and competitive.
  • Participate actively in the development team's strategic planning, contributing to setting annual institutional giving goals and devising innovative strategies to grow the funding pipeline.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the broader development team with writing and editing other fundraising and communications materials, including annual reports, case statements, donor newsletters, and appeal letters.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-7 years of professional experience in grant writing and institutional fundraising within the nonprofit sector.
