As a Nursery Assistant, you are at the heart of our early years setting, playing a crucial role in the daily lives of our children. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist in the planning and implementation of age-appropriate, play-based activities that support the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of each child.
  • Ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all children in your care at all times, adhering strictly to the nursery's safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and stimulating learning environment, both indoors and outdoors, that is welcoming and accessible to all children.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with children, providing comfort, encouragement, and support to help them feel secure, valued, and confident.
  • Observe, assess, and document each child's progress and development using the nursery's tracking systems, contributing to their individual learning journeys.
  • Support children with personal care routines, including mealtimes, nappy changing, toilet training, and hand washing, while promoting independence and positive hygiene habits.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with parents and caregivers at drop-off and pick-up, providing daily updates on their child's activities, achievements, and well-being.
  • Supervise children closely during free play, structured activities, mealtimes, and outdoor time to ensure their safety and encourage positive social interactions.
  • Implement and promote the nursery's policies and procedures, including those for health and safety, equality, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Use positive and effective behavior management strategies to guide children's behavior in a gentle, supportive, and consistent manner.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere where every child is respected as an individual and their unique needs are met.
  • Administer basic first aid when necessary (if certified) and meticulously record any accidents or incidents in line with nursery procedures.
  • Actively engage with children by singing songs, reading stories, and participating in imaginative play to stimulate their language, literacy, and creative skills.
  • Support children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), working collaboratively with the SENCO and other professionals to implement individual support plans.

Secondary Functions

  • Work collaboratively as part of a dedicated team, sharing ideas, offering support to colleagues, and contributing to a positive staff morale.
  • Attend and actively participate in regular staff meetings, parent evenings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.
  • Assist in setting up the learning environment before sessions and clearing away activities and resources afterward, ensuring equipment is well-maintained and stored correctly.
  • Contribute to the creation of vibrant and engaging displays of children's artwork and learning experiences throughout the nursery.
  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals and snacks for the children, ensuring you are aware of and catering to individual dietary requirements, allergies, and cultural needs.
  • Greet children and parents warmly upon arrival and ensure a smooth, positive transition at the start and end of each day.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework or relevant local curriculum.
  • Current Pediatric First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Understanding of Safeguarding, Child Protection, and Health & Safety procedures in a childcare setting.
  • Food Hygiene and Safety certification.
  • Ability to create and follow activity plans and document children's progress.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. A willingness to undertake training towards a formal childcare qualification.

Preferred Education:

  • Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (or equivalent), or a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience working with children aged 0-5 in a professional, licensed childcare or nursery setting.

Preferred:

  • Prior hands-on experience in a nursery or preschool environment is highly desirable. Experience working with specific age groups (infants, toddlers) and a solid understanding of their developmental needs would be a significant asset.
