Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diligently prepare and cook a variety of fresh, nutritious, and well-balanced meals and snacks for children, strictly following pre-planned menus and catering to different age groups from babies to pre-schoolers.
  • Meticulously manage and cater to individual dietary requirements, including allergies, intolerances, and cultural or religious food preferences, ensuring all meals are correctly prepared, labelled, and served to the right child.
  • Uphold the highest standards of food hygiene and safety at all times, adhering to HACCP principles and local authority environmental health regulations to ensure a safe environment for all.
  • Carry out the comprehensive cleaning of the kitchen, including all surfaces, utensils, crockery, cutlery, and heavy-duty equipment, following a rigorous daily and weekly cleaning rota.
  • Operate the commercial dishwasher to ensure all items are washed and sanitised effectively, and manually wash specific items as required.
  • Assist in the serving of meals to children, ensuring appropriate portion control for different age groups and promoting a positive and sociable mealtime atmosphere.
  • Take and record food and equipment temperatures at designated intervals throughout the day to ensure compliance with food safety legislation.
  • Monitor and manage stock levels of all food and cleaning supplies, assisting the Nursery Cook with placing orders to ensure the kitchen is always well-equipped.
  • Implement a strict stock rotation system (First-In, First-Out) for all food deliveries and in all storage areas (fridge, freezer, dry store) to minimise waste and ensure freshness.
  • Ensure the safe and correct storage of all food items, deliveries, and chemicals in line with COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) guidelines.
  • Prepare specialised meals such as weaning purees for babies and modify meal textures for younger children, following specific guidance from parents and staff.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, including cleaning schedules, temperature logs, and documentation related to children's dietary needs.
  • Ensure the kitchen and food storage areas are kept secure at all times and that no unauthorised persons enter the kitchen.
  • Proactively report any maintenance issues, equipment faults, or health and safety concerns to the Nursery Manager or Cook in a timely manner.
  • Properly dispose of all kitchen waste, including food waste and recycling, in accordance with the nursery's policies and local council requirements.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the Nursery Cook in the development and planning of new seasonal menus that are appealing to children and meet nutritional guidelines for early years.
  • Occasionally participate in and support food-related learning activities with the children, such as simple baking or food tasting sessions, under the guidance of childcare practitioners.
  • Assist with setting up and clearing away the dining areas before and after mealtimes to ensure a smooth and efficient service.
  • Contribute to creating a welcoming and positive mealtime experience by interacting appropriately with children and staff during food service.
  • Attend and actively participate in team meetings and relevant professional development training to stay updated on best practices in catering and child nutrition.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering: A certified understanding of food hygiene, safety practices, and legal responsibilities is essential.
  • Allergen Awareness & Management: In-depth knowledge of the 14 major allergens and procedures for preventing cross-contamination in a busy kitchen environment.
  • Basic Cooking & Food Preparation: Competency in basic culinary skills, including knife skills, following recipes, and operating standard kitchen equipment.
  • Knowledge of COSHH & HACCP: Understanding and practical application of health and safety principles related to chemicals and food safety management systems.
  • Stock Control & Inventory Management: The ability to monitor stock levels, implement stock rotation, and assist with ordering supplies efficiently.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. A willingness to undertake mandatory food safety training is required.

Preferred Education:

  • Level 2 Food Safety and Hygiene for Catering Certificate.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0-2 years of experience working in a professional kitchen, catering, or food service environment.

Preferred:

  • Previous experience in a similar role within a nursery, school, or care home setting is highly advantageous. Demonstrable experience catering for individuals with specific dietary needs and allergies is also strongly preferred.
