Core Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of early years practitioners, fostering a collaborative and positive team culture while role-modeling outstanding practice daily.
  • Oversee the smooth day-to-day operation of the room, ensuring routines are followed and high standards of care and education are consistently maintained.
  • Drive the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a rich, engaging, and age-appropriate curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework.
  • Act as a dedicated Key Person for a group of children, building secure attachments and serving as the primary point of contact for their families.
  • Conduct and oversee regular, meaningful observations and assessments of children's development, using this insight to inform individual planning and next steps.
  • Guarantee the learning environment is safe, stimulating, and inclusive, performing daily risk assessments and ensuring resources are well-maintained and accessible.
  • Build and nurture exceptional partnerships with parents and carers, facilitating open communication through daily updates, progress meetings, and digital learning journals.
  • Manage staff deployment and room ratios effectively to ensure constant compliance with regulatory requirements and optimal child supervision.
  • Support the professional growth of your team members by conducting regular supervisions, performance appraisals, and identifying relevant training opportunities.
  • Work in close collaboration with the nursery's leadership team, contributing to the setting's continuous improvement plan and strategic goals.
  • Act as a designated Safeguarding lead within the room, ensuring all child protection policies are rigorously followed and any concerns are reported immediately and appropriately.
  • Uphold the highest standards of health, safety, and hygiene, including overseeing the administration of medication and the meticulous recording of any accidents or incidents.
  • Champion inclusive practices, working proactively to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) in partnership with the SENCO and external agencies.
  • Organise and lead engaging parent evenings, nursery open days, and other community events to promote the nursery and strengthen family bonds.
  • Manage the room's budget for educational resources and equipment, making thoughtful purchasing decisions to enhance the learning environment.
  • Ensure a smooth and welcoming settling-in process for new children and their families, providing reassurance and support during this crucial transition period.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date records for each child, including developmental tracking, learning journals, and administrative files.
  • Liaise confidently with external professionals, such as health visitors, speech and language therapists, and local authority advisors, to support children's holistic development.
  • Lead regular team meetings to reflect on practice, discuss child development, plan curriculum topics, and cascade important information from management.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Ofsted regulations and play an active role in all preparations for inspections to showcase the room's high standards.
  • Proactively manage staff well-being within your team, offering support and guidance to maintain a motivated and happy workforce.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • EYFS Expertise: In-depth, practical knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and its implementation.
  • Childcare Qualification: A full and relevant Level 3 qualification in Childcare (e.g., NNEB, CACHE Level 3, NVQ Level 3).
  • Safeguarding: Certified Safeguarding training (Level 2 or 3), with a robust understanding of child protection procedures.
  • First Aid: Current Paediatric First Aid certification is essential.
  • Observation & Assessment: Proven ability to use various observation techniques to assess child development and plan effective next steps.
  • Digital Proficiency: Experience using nursery management software and digital learning journal platforms (e.g., Tapestry, Famly, ParentZone).
  • Health & Safety: Strong knowledge of health, safety, and hygiene standards within a childcare setting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A full and relevant Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education or an equivalent qualification.

Preferred Education:

A Level 4/5 qualification, Foundation Degree, or Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Studies or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

A minimum of 2-4 years of hands-on experience working as a practitioner in a nursery or early years setting.

Preferred:

At least 1-2 years of experience in a supervisory capacity, such as a Senior Practitioner, Third-in-Charge, or acting Room Leader.
