Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and clinical leadership to a team of Registered Nurses (RNs), LPNs, and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) to ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Oversee and manage all nursing activities and patient care services during an assigned shift, ensuring smooth and efficient workflow and operational continuity.
- Develop, manage, and adjust daily and monthly staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage across all shifts, responding to call-outs and fluctuations in patient census while maintaining compliance with nurse-to-patient ratios.
- Act as the primary clinical resource and expert for staff, providing guidance on complex patient cases, evidence-based practices, and the interpretation of clinical policies and procedures.
- Perform regular patient rounds to assess the quality of care, address patient and family concerns, ensure patient satisfaction, and identify opportunities for immediate service recovery.
- Facilitate effective and timely communication between nursing staff, physicians, and other interdisciplinary team members to coordinate care and ensure a unified approach to patient treatment plans.
- Manage and de-escalate conflicts among staff, patients, or family members, employing strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills to achieve positive outcomes.
- Conduct initial investigations into patient incidents, staff performance issues, or safety events, documenting findings and reporting to Nurse Management in accordance with facility protocol.
- Monitor and ensure staff compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including JCAHO, DOH, and HIPAA standards, as well as internal policies.
- Lead and coordinate responses to medical emergencies and facility codes (e.g., Code Blue, Rapid Response), directing staff and ensuring proper protocols are followed.
- Evaluate staff performance through direct observation and clinical competency assessments, providing real-time feedback, coaching, and contributing to formal performance appraisals.
- Facilitate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, ensuring all processes are handled efficiently, documentation is complete, and communication with all parties is clear.
- Manage the allocation of resources, including staff, equipment, and supplies, on the shift to ensure patient care needs are met in a fiscally responsible manner.
- Serve as the on-site administrative leader in the absence of higher-level management, making critical decisions regarding patient care and facility operations.
- Assist in the onboarding and orientation of new nursing staff, providing a supportive environment and ensuring they are competent in their roles before working independently.
- Promote and model a culture of safety, continuous improvement, and professional accountability within the nursing department.
