Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Analyze and interpret nutrient data for raw ingredients, formulas, and finished products using specialized software (e.g., Genesis R&D, ESHA Food Processor) and internal databases.
- Develop, verify, and finalize accurate Nutrition Facts panels, ingredient statements, and allergen declarations for product packaging, ensuring full compliance with FDA, USDA, and international regulations.
- Manage and maintain the integrity of the corporate nutrition database, ensuring all ingredient data is up-to-date, accurate, and properly documented from supplier specifications.
- Collaborate directly with Research & Development and Culinary teams during the product development lifecycle to provide nutritional guidance and recommend ingredient or formulation adjustments to meet specific health targets (e.g., sodium reduction, added sugar limits, fortification).
- Conduct thorough nutritional analysis of competitor products to benchmark our portfolio and identify opportunities for innovation and market differentiation.
- Substantiate and document all nutrient content claims, health claims, and other marketing statements to ensure they are scientifically sound and legally compliant.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all internal and external inquiries related to product nutrition, ingredients, and allergen information, providing timely and accurate responses.
- Review and approve marketing materials, website content, and consumer-facing communications to ensure the nutritional information presented is accurate and consistent with approved data.
- Stay abreast of emerging nutrition research, consumer health trends, and evolving food labeling regulations to proactively inform business strategy and mitigate compliance risks.
- Generate and maintain technical documentation and detailed reports for all product nutrition information, supporting regulatory submissions and internal audits.
- Lead projects related to nutritional labeling updates, menu transparency initiatives, and system-wide reformulation efforts to improve the overall health profile of the product portfolio.
- Validate the nutritional information provided by co-packers and external manufacturers, conducting audits and requesting corrective actions as needed.
- Perform statistical analysis on large datasets to uncover trends, insights, and correlations between nutritional composition and consumer preferences or health outcomes.
- Develop and provide training to internal departments such as Marketing, Sales, and Customer Service on the nutritional attributes and benefits of our products.
Secondary Functions
- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to answer complex questions from leadership and business partners.
- Contribute to the organization's data governance strategy by helping to define standards and processes for nutrition-related data.
- Collaborate with IT and engineering teams to translate business needs for nutrition data management into technical requirements for system improvements or new software implementation.
- Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other agile ceremonies as part of a broader data-focused team.
- Assist the Quality Assurance team in investigating any product non-conformance issues related to nutritional composition or labeling.
- Partner with the Procurement team to evaluate new ingredient suppliers based on nutritional specifications, quality, and documentation.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Nutrition Analysis Software: High proficiency in Genesis R&D, ESHA Food Processor, or similar nutrient analysis software is essential.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of FDA and USDA food labeling regulations (NLEA), including requirements for Nutrition Facts, ingredient statements, and allergen labeling.
- Nutrient Database Management: Experience creating, maintaining, and validating large sets of ingredient and formula data.
- Advanced Excel: Mastery of Excel for data manipulation, including pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and complex formulas for analysis and reporting.
- Food Science Principles: Solid foundation in food chemistry, food processing, and the impact of processing on nutrient content.
