Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive nutritional screenings for newly admitted patients using validated tools to identify individuals at nutritional risk and determine the need for further dietetic intervention.
  • Execute and implement nutrition care plans as developed and delegated by a Registered Dietitian, ensuring fidelity to the prescribed dietary orders and interventions.
  • Diligently monitor and document patients' food and fluid intake, tolerance to prescribed diets, and overall nutritional status, reporting any significant changes or concerns to the clinical team.
  • Provide foundational nutrition education to patients and their families regarding prescribed diet modifications, food-drug interactions, and healthy food choices to support adherence post-discharge.
  • Collaborate closely with Registered Dietitians, escalating complex cases and providing detailed patient information, diet histories, and intake data to support advanced nutritional assessments.
  • Accurately and in a timely manner, document all patient interactions, screenings, interventions, educational sessions, and progress notes within the electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Ensure patients receive their prescribed therapeutic diets by meticulously verifying tray tickets against diet orders, communicating effectively with food service staff, and making necessary adjustments.
  • Perform detailed calorie counts and nutrient intake analyses, manually or with software, to assess the adequacy of patients' nutritional consumption against their estimated needs.
  • Manage the ordering, stocking, and proper distribution of enteral formulas and oral nutritional supplements as prescribed by the clinical team, ensuring correct product and quantity.
  • Conduct patient interviews to obtain comprehensive diet histories, food preferences, allergies, and cultural or religious dietary restrictions to help personalize meal plans and enhance compliance.
  • Serve as a key communication link between the patient, nursing staff, and the clinical nutrition team regarding any dietary concerns, patient refusals, or intake issues.
  • Uphold and enforce strict food safety and sanitation standards (e.g., HACCP) in all areas of food handling, formula preparation, and patient service to prevent foodborne illness.
  • Assist patients with daily menu selections, offering appropriate, compliant alternatives and modifications to ensure satisfaction while adhering to their prescribed therapeutic diet orders.
  • Evaluate patient and family comprehension of nutrition education and prescribed diet therapies, reinforcing information and using teach-back methods to confirm understanding.
  • Participate in meal-round audits and patient tray assessments to monitor and improve the accuracy, quality, temperature, and overall patient satisfaction with the food service.
  • Assist with the hygienic preparation, labeling, and storage of enteral (tube feeding) formulas, ensuring the correct formulation is delivered to the correct patient.
  • Collect and meticulously record specific dietary and clinical data for departmental research, performance improvement projects, and ongoing quality assurance metrics.
  • Proactively identify and resolve patient food and nutrition-related issues, complaints, or problems in a compassionate, professional, and timely manner.
  • Contribute to the discharge planning process by providing patients and caregivers with appropriate take-home educational materials and information on community nutrition resources.
  • Actively participate in continuing education opportunities, departmental in-services, and professional training to stay current with best practices in clinical nutrition and patient care.
  • Attend and contribute to interdisciplinary team rounds and unit huddles, providing valuable updates on the nutritional status, intake, and needs of patients on the unit.

  • Assist in the development and revision of patient-facing nutrition education materials, menus, and departmental policies under the supervision of a dietitian.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate's degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a closely related field, OR
  • Completion of a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) accredited program.
