Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist Registered Dietitians with comprehensive nutritional assessments for patients and clients, including the collection and interpretation of anthropometric data, diet histories, and biochemical labs.
  • Develop and customize individualized meal plans and nutrition care plans under supervision, considering medical conditions, dietary restrictions, cultural backgrounds, and personal preferences.
  • Conduct one-on-one nutrition counseling and education sessions for low-risk patients, helping them set achievable health goals and understand their dietary needs.
  • Create, design, and deliver engaging nutrition education materials, such as handouts, presentations, and interactive workshops for community groups, patients, or employees.
  • Perform detailed nutrient analysis of individual food diaries, recipes, and full-scale menus using specialized software like ESHA Food Processor or Cronometer to ensure nutritional adequacy.
  • Support the management of clinical nutrition services by meticulously documenting patient interactions, progress, and care plan adjustments in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
  • Actively participate in interdisciplinary healthcare team meetings (e.g., patient rounds) to discuss patient progress and provide valuable nutritional insights and recommendations.
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of community nutrition programs, which may include health fairs, cooking demonstrations, and educational grocery store tours.
  • Research and synthesize current scientific literature and evidence-based guidelines on various nutrition-related topics to support content development and departmental knowledge.
  • Aid in quality improvement projects related to food service operations, focusing on enhancing patient satisfaction, ensuring compliance with therapeutic diet standards, and menu accuracy.
  • Shadow and support dietitians across a variety of practice settings, including acute care (hospital), outpatient clinics, long-term care, and community wellness, to gain a broad scope of experience.
  • Help manage and create compelling, evidence-based content for organizational social media platforms, blogs, and newsletters to promote nutrition education and wellness initiatives.
  • Respond to basic nutrition-related inquiries from patients, clients, or the general public under the guidance and direction of a supervising dietitian.
  • Assist with therapeutic menu planning and recipe development for food service departments, taking into account specific dietary needs, allergens, and budget constraints.
  • Conduct thorough patient interviews to gather detailed diet histories, eating patterns, food allergies, and sociocultural factors that impact food choices.
  • Monitor and accurately document patient food and fluid intake, as well as tolerance to prescribed diets, nutritional supplements, and enteral nutrition.
  • Contribute to the review and updating of departmental policies and procedures related to the provision of clinical nutrition care and services.
  • Support the inventory management and proper procurement of specialized oral nutritional supplements, infant formulas, and tube feeding formulas.

  • Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT): Foundational knowledge of applying nutrition science to treat and manage diseases.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor's degree program from an accredited university in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a closely related field.

Preferred Education:

Enrolled in or a recent graduate of an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD).
