Core Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Nutrition Therapist Intern is dynamic and patient-focused. You'll be mentored closely as you take on increasing responsibility for the nutritional well-being of clients.

Primary Functions

  • Assist senior dietitians in conducting comprehensive nutritional assessments by gathering patient medical history, lab data, anthropometrics, and diet history.
  • Develop individualized meal plans and dietary care plans under the supervision and final approval of a Registered Dietitian.
  • Provide one-on-one nutrition education and counseling to patients and their families on managing chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and renal conditions.
  • Document all patient interactions, assessments, interventions, and progress notes meticulously and accurately within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Create and deliver engaging educational presentations and group workshops on various nutrition topics for both patient populations and community groups.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and follow up on patient progress towards their nutritional goals, helping to adjust care plans as necessary.
  • Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including physicians, nurses, and therapists, to ensure integrated and holistic patient care.
  • Calculate specific nutrient requirements for patients with complex medical needs, such as those requiring enteral (tube feeding) or parenteral nutrition.

Preferred Education:

  • Enrolled in or having completed a Master of Science in Nutrition or a related discipline.
  • Accepted into or currently completing a supervised practice program (Dietetic Internship).
