An Office Furniture Installer is responsible for the safe, accurate and timely assembly, installation, relocation and repair of commercial office furniture systems, cubicles, workstations, seating, casegoods and ancillary items. This role works directly with project managers, technicians, vendors and client on-site contacts to ensure installations meet floor plans, specifications, ergonomic standards and quality expectations. Installers must be proficient with hand and power tools, read and interpret blueprints and job drawings, manage on-site logistics, follow OSHA and company safety procedures, and deliver excellent customer-facing service during single-site and multi-site projects.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret and execute installation drawings, CAD plans and client floor plans to place systems furniture, workstations, panels, partitions and casegoods accurately to specification.
  • Assemble modular systems furniture, cubicles, workstations and benching systems using manufacturer instructions, standard hardware and specialty fasteners to ensure structural integrity and appearance.
  • Install desks, credenzas, conference tables, shelving, storage units, filing systems and ancillary office furnishings to project specifications and ergonomic standards.
  • Mount monitors, monitor arms, whiteboards, tackable wall panels and acoustic panels; route and secure cables to maintain clean, code-compliant installations.
  • Install power and data raceways, wire managers and cable pathways in coordination with low-voltage and electrical contractors to ensure integrated workstation connectivity.
  • Disassemble and relocate office furniture and systems during tenant moves, office expansions or renovations while minimizing damage and ensuring reinstallation per new layouts.
  • Conduct on-site measurements and field verification to confirm site conditions match plans; make documented adjustments and notify project management of discrepancies.
  • Coordinate and supervise small installation crews on larger jobs, delegating tasks, checking quality of work and maintaining schedules to meet project milestones.
  • Operate vans, box trucks and cargo lifts; load, unload and secure furniture and components using proper material handling equipment (dollies, straps, pallet jacks, forklifts).
  • Inspect incoming shipments for damage, verify hardware counts and inventory parts; report shortages or defects to project leads and vendor contacts.
  • Maintain clean, safe work areas and adhere to OSHA and company safety policies; use PPE, fall protection, and safe lifting techniques on every job.
  • Complete daily installation paperwork, time sheets, site logs, delivery receipts, punch lists and client sign-offs accurately and on time.
  • Perform warranty repairs and remedial work on office furniture, including re-fastening hardware, replacing worn parts and refinishing minor blemishes.
  • Prepare job sites for installation (protect floors, doors, elevators), coordinate building access, loading dock requirements and elevator scheduling with building management.
  • Communicate directly with clients on-site to address questions, confirm placement and provide courteous service while representing the company professionally.
  • Maintain tools and company vehicles in good working order; perform basic tool maintenance, keep an accurate tools inventory and report lost or damaged equipment.
  • Troubleshoot fit and finish issues during installations, identify root causes (damaged parts, incorrect orders, site conditions) and propose practical solutions to project leads.
  • Follow manufacturer-specific installation standards for brands such as Steelcase, Herman Miller, Haworth, Knoll and Teknion to preserve warranties and performance.
  • Meet productivity targets for installations, including daily travel plans, job sequencing and multi-site coordination to optimize technician time and reduce customer disruption.
  • Ensure final quality control by completing punch lists, making adjustments, verifying alignment and obtaining customer acceptance prior to leaving the site.
  • Participate in after-hours or weekend installations and emergency move-ins when required, coordinating logistics and communicating schedule impacts to clients and managers.
  • Adhere to company policies for secure handling and disposal of packing materials, surplus parts and waste; maintain environmental and recycling best practices.

Secondary Functions

  • Support inventory reconciliation and parts ordering by providing field feedback on missing or damaged components and suggested replacement parts.
  • Assist with technician training programs, mentoring new installers on manufacturer standards, safe tool use, and customer service expectations.
  • Collect site photos, installation notes and as-built documentation for project closeout packages and internal knowledge bases.
  • Participate in pre-installation site surveys and client walkthroughs to identify site constraints and special handling needs.
  • Coordinate with vendors, electricians, movers and building management to sequence work and minimize downtime for client operations.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; equivalent hands-on installation experience accepted.

  • Manufacturer-specific installer certification (e.g., Steelcase, Herman Miller, Haworth) or apprenticeship completion.
