Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead, coach, and develop a cross-functional operations team (operators, technicians, material handlers) across multiple shifts, ensuring staffing levels, clear role assignments, daily huddles, and ongoing performance feedback to meet production and service targets.
- Manage daily production and operational schedules by coordinating work assignments, shift handovers, and resource allocation to meet customer demand, on-time delivery targets, and inventory objectives.
- Oversee adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and safety protocols; update and enforce controlled documents and ensure team compliance with documented processes.
- Track, analyze, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as throughput, yield, downtime, on-time delivery, cycle time, and scrap rates; use KPI trends to prioritize improvement actions and escalate risks.
- Implement and sustain Lean manufacturing/continuous improvement initiatives (5S, Kaizen events, value stream mapping) to eliminate waste, reduce lead time, and improve overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action processes (5 Whys, Fishbone) for quality escapes, production disruptions, and safety incidents; ensure timely verification and closure of corrective actions.
- Manage inventory control activities including cycle counts, stock replenishment, shrinkage mitigation, and coordination with procurement to maintain target inventory levels and reduce carrying cost.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, safety and environmental standards (OSHA, EPA, GMP as applicable); conduct regular safety inspections, incident investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
- Supervise onboarding, training, and competency assessments for new hires and cross-trained employees; maintain training records, build career pathways, and support succession planning.
- Coordinate maintenance and reliability activities with maintenance teams or vendors to schedule preventive maintenance, minimize unplanned downtime, and prioritize repairs based on production impact.
- Control operating expenses within approved budgets by managing overtime, labor productivity, supply usage, and vendor/service costs while identifying cost reduction opportunities.
- Drive product quality initiatives in partnership with Quality Assurance by enforcing inspection checkpoints, nonconformance handling, and continuous product/process validation to meet customer specifications.
- Execute shift-to-shift and cross-functional communication protocols; provide clear escalation paths and timely updates to stakeholders during operational disruptions or changeovers.
- Plan and validate production changeovers or line reconfigurations to minimize downtime and ensure correct material, tooling, and documentation are available prior to start-up.
- Lead performance reviews and one-on-one coaching sessions; set measurable objectives for direct reports and facilitate corrective performance plans when required.
- Oversee shipping, receiving, and logistics coordination to ensure order accuracy, proper packaging, compliance documentation, and timely carrier scheduling for customer deliveries.
- Implement and maintain data-driven dashboards and operational scorecards (including ERP/WMS integration) to provide transparent real-time visibility and support continuous decision making.
- Facilitate cross-departmental projects such as capacity planning, new product introductions (NPI), and process validation to achieve company goals on scope, schedule, and budget.
- Manage vendor and contractor activities on-site, including contractor safety orientation, work permits, and verification of completed services against contractual commitments.
- Champion customer focus by handling escalations, coordinating root cause investigations with cross-functional teams, and implementing corrective actions that prevent recurrence and improve satisfaction.
- Ensure proper documentation of shift logs, production records, safety reports, and compliance paperwork to support audits and regulatory reviews.
- Lead emergency response and business continuity activities: develop contingency plans for critical equipment failure, labor shortages, or supply disruptions, and act as an incident commander when required.
