Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Precisely assemble, align, and integrate lenses, mirrors, prisms, fiber ferrules, optomechanical mounts and subassemblies according to engineering drawings and process documentation, achieving specified optical tolerances and repeatable performance.
  • Perform interferometric measurements (e.g., Zygo, Twyman-Green) to verify surface figure, wavefront error, and transmitted wavefront, and record results in the quality management system.
  • Calibrate and maintain laser sources, power meters, spectrometers, beam profilers and other optical test equipment to ensure traceability and measurement accuracy within defined uncertainty budgets.
  • Execute optical alignment using microscopes, translation stages, kinematic mounts, beam splitters and active alignment tools to optimize coupling efficiency, M2, beam waist position and pointing stability.
  • Build and test fiber-optic assemblies including fiber cleaving, splicing (fusion and mechanical), connectorization (FC/PC, LC, ST), polishing and insertion loss testing using OTDRs and power meters.
  • Develop, follow and refine standardized test procedures and work instructions (SOPs) for acceptance, environmental, and final functional tests, ensuring consistent product quality and manufacturability.
  • Troubleshoot optical and optoelectronic systems by isolating optical, mechanical and electronic root causes; recommend corrective actions and implement fixes under engineering guidance.
  • Measure optical coatings and spectral response using spectrometers and reflectometers to confirm coating performance, bandpass, and reflectance/transmittance specifications.
  • Perform optical characterization of assemblies (e.g., modulation transfer function, spot size, signal-to-noise ratio) and analyze data to verify compliance with design requirements.
  • Use computer-aided design prints, assembly drawings and BOMs to identify components, fasteners and adhesives; perform optomechanical assembly with torque and cleanliness controls.
  • Record and manage test data, produce detailed inspection and test reports, enter results into LIMS / QMS, and support traceability for customer and regulatory audits.
  • Conduct environmental, vibration and thermal tests on optical subassemblies, monitor performance under stress, and document any drift or degradation in optical alignment or throughput.
  • Clean, inspect and handle optical elements using approved solvents, lint-free wipes and particle control methods to prevent contamination and surface damage in accordance with cleanroom protocols.
  • Apply adhesives and potting compounds precisely for optical bonding and sealing, and cure materials following safety and process specifications to avoid induced stress and index mismatch.
  • Collaborate with opto-mechanical and electrical engineers to translate prototype designs into robust, manufacturable products, recommending design-for-manufacture and testability improvements.
  • Perform incoming inspection and sampling of optical components from vendors, verifying dimensional, surface quality and coating specifications and escalating nonconformances.
  • Set up automated test stations, integrate sensors and data acquisition (DAQ) interfaces, and run batch tests to support production throughput and statistical process control.
  • Participate in root-cause analysis (RCA), CAPA, FMEA and continuous improvement projects to reduce scrap, lower rework rates and increase first-pass yield in optical manufacturing.
  • Train manufacturing and test personnel on safe handling of lasers and hazardous optical materials, proper use of measurement equipment and adherence to safety and cleanroom rules.
  • Maintain inventory of critical optical parts, tools and calibration standards and place requisitions based on production forecasts and vendor lead times to minimize downtime.

Secondary Functions

  • Support prototype builds and small-batch product introductions, providing feedback on assembly time, tooling needs and test coverage.
  • Assist engineering teams with lab characterization campaigns, including custom fixture fabrication and ad-hoc measurement setups.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by proposing process changes, tooling improvements and test automation to improve throughput and reduce variation.
  • Help maintain lab and cleanroom facilities, ensure equipment calibration schedules are met, and perform preventive maintenance on optical benches and alignment stages.
  • Support customer returns and field failure investigations by reproducing failure modes, documenting evidence, and providing actionable recommendations.
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews to ensure manufacturability, serviceability and compliance with optical performance targets.
  • Provide hands-on support during installation, commissioning and on-site acceptance testing when required.
  • Update and refine job travelers, assembly instructions and training materials to reflect process changes and best practices.
  • Monitor and implement EHS (Environmental, Health & Safety) and laser safety requirements, including signage, eyewear policy and hazard controls.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to improve component quality, clarify drawing requirements, and expedite corrective actions for nonconforming optical parts.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Optical alignment and assembly of lenses, mirrors, prisms and optomechanical subassemblies using kinematic mounts and precision stages.
  • Interferometry (Zygo/Twyman-Green) for wavefront and surface figure testing and interpretation of interferograms.
  • Optical metrology and test equipment proficiency: spectrometers, optical power meters, beam profilers, OTDR, collimators and microscopes.
  • Fiber optics skills: fusion splicing, connectorization, polishing, insertion loss and return loss measurements.
  • Laser handling and alignment, including visible and near-infrared diode/solid-state lasers and safety best practices.
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, BOMs and optical schematics.
  • Use of laboratory data acquisition tools and software (LabVIEW, Python, MATLAB, NI DAQ) for automated testing and data logging.
  • Cleanroom procedures, contamination control, and particle-sensitive handling of optical components.
  • Optical coating evaluation and spectral characterization techniques.
  • Soldering, basic electronics troubleshooting and familiarity with photodetectors, amplifiers and power supplies.
  • Calibration and preventive maintenance of optical test equipment with traceability to standards.
  • Familiarity with quality systems (ISO 9001, AS9100) and documentation practices (nonconformance reporting, corrective action tracking).
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and basic process capability metrics (Cp/Cpk).
  • Use of metrology tools: micrometers, calipers, optical comparators and coordinate measuring machines (CMM) for optomechanical verification.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with relevant technical/vocational training in optics, photonics, electronics, or mechanical assembly.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Optical Technology, Photonics, Engineering Technology, Applied Physics, or related field.
  • Certificate programs in fiber optics, laser safety, or precision metrology.
