Primary Functions
- Interpret, validate and accurately dispense eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions by reviewing prescriptions from optometrists and ophthalmologists and verifying lens parameters prior to ordering and delivery.
- Perform precise frame and facial measurements (PD, segment height, vertex distance, pantoscopic tilt) to ensure accurate lens centration and optimal visual performance for single-vision, bifocal, and progressive lenses.
- Recommend and explain lens materials, lens designs (single vision, bifocal, progressive), coatings (anti-reflective, scratch-resistant, UV protection), and specialty options (blue light filtering, high-index) tailored to patient lifestyle, prescription strength, and budget.
- Conduct contact lens fittings, including trial lens selection, insertion and removal instruction, contact lens assessment of fit and movement, and schedule follow-ups for adaptation and solution recommendations.
- Use lensometry, refracting equipment, and basic vision screening tools to confirm prescriptions, measure existing eyewear, check power and prism, and identify lens defects or improper fabrication.
- Place and manage optical lab orders accurately using dispensing software or lab portals, monitor order status, resolve discrepancies with labs, and coordinate rush orders when clinically necessary.
- Adjust, fit and repair frames on-site, using hand tools and heat-adjustment techniques to improve comfort, alignment and aesthetics; document adjustments for follow-up care.
- Complete detailed patient records in the electronic health record (EHR) or optical management system, including measurements, product selections, warranties, and aftercare instructions to ensure continuity of care.
- Provide compassionate patient education on proper wear, cleaning, storage, and replacement schedules for glasses and contact lenses to maximize visual outcomes and minimize complications.
- Assist patients with insurance benefits verification, prepare pre-authorizations when required, process claims for optical benefits, and explain coverage limitations and out-of-pocket costs clearly and professionally.
- Meet and exceed retail and clinical targets by actively recommending appropriate premium lens options and add-ons while maintaining a patient-first approach to product recommendations.
- Train and mentor junior opticians and optical assistants on best practices for measurements, frame adjustments, customer service, and lab order processes to maintain consistent service quality.
- Conduct frame styling consultations that consider facial anatomy, prescription requirements, lifestyle needs, and current fashion trends to guide patients toward frames that deliver both optimum optics and confidence.
- Maintain and calibrate optical instruments and equipment (lensometer, pupilometer, slit lamp for pre-testing, frame heater) to manufacturer specifications and ensure accuracy of measurements and safety of patients.
- Implement and uphold infection control, sanitation, and safety protocols including cleaning lenses and frames, disinfecting trial lenses, and following universal precautions for patient contact areas.
- Resolve customer complaints and warranty issues diplomatically, arranging repairs, remakes or refunds as appropriate and coordinating with lab partners and store management to achieve timely resolutions.
- Maintain stock levels for frames, sample lenses, contact lens trials, and optical supplies, perform regular inventory counts, reorder proactively, and assist with merchandising to maximize sell-through and patient choice.
- Participate in outreach vision screenings, community events, and in-store promotions to grow the patient base, educate the public on eye health and encourage regular eye exams and proper eyewear compliance.
- Ensure compliance with state licensing regulations, scope of practice, and continuing education requirements; stay current on new lens technologies, regulatory changes, and retail best practices.
- Collaborate closely with optometrists and ophthalmologists to clarify complex prescriptions, discuss specialty lens needs (e.g., high, irregular astigmatism, prism), and coordinate patient care plans for optimal visual outcomes.
- Prepare and process returns, exchanges and remakes according to store policy and liaise with labs and suppliers to ensure timely corrective action for fabrication errors or defective products.
