Primary Functions

  • Use orthodontic wire-bending machines and manual pliers to create precise archwires, springs and auxiliary components with consistent bends and springback characteristics.
  • Operate dental CAD software to design appliance frameworks, aligner staging and attachments, and export STL/CAD files for CAM milling or 3D printing.
  • Program and operate 3D printers and post-processing equipment to produce accurate models and direct-print appliances, managing orientation, supports, resin selection and curing cycles.
  • Finish and polish retainers, clear aligners, and acrylic or thermoplastic appliances to ensure patient comfort, edge smoothness and optimal fit.
  • Fabricate clear aligners and thermoformed appliances using vacuum or pressure forming machines; trim, thermoform, and adjust to orthodontist specifications and aligner staging plans.
  • Perform precision trimming, finishing and smoothing of appliance edges and wire terminations to eliminate sharp points or irritation risks for patients.
  • Conduct quality control inspections at multiple stages (model, intermediate, final appliance) to verify dimensional accuracy, material integrity and compliance with the prescription before shipping.
  • Repair and rework appliances returned from clinics, including relining, rebonding of attachments, solder repairs and replacement of broken components according to documented procedures.
  • Collaborate with orthodontists, clinicians and lab managers to clarify prescription details, recommend material alternatives, or propose design improvements to improve treatment outcomes and reduce chairside adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate production records, label trays and packages, and prepare shipping documentation to ensure traceability of appliances and models.
  • Adhere to infection control, cross-contamination prevention and hazardous materials handling protocols when processing impressions, models and appliances.
  • Estimate turnaround times and prioritize production schedules to meet clinic deadlines and maintain on-time deliveries for scheduled patient appointments.
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment including wire formers, cutters, vacuum/pressure formers, ovens, polishing units and microscopes; schedule preventive maintenance and escalate equipment faults.
  • Train, mentor and supervise junior technicians, trainees and temporary staff in appliance construction techniques, safety procedures and quality standards.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting workflow optimizations, material substitutions or digital workflow enhancements that reduce costs and increase throughput.
  • Stay current with orthodontic materials, bonding technologies, digital orthodontics, and regulatory updates; implement new techniques for aligner production, bonding jigs and indirect bonding trays.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations and dental laboratory accreditation standards by maintaining appropriate documentation, material safety data sheets (MSDS), and device traceability records.
  • Provide technical support to clinical staff for appliance fitting questions, chairside adjustments, and troubleshooting fit or occlusal interferences.
  • Manage inventory of commonly used orthodontic materials (resins, wires, bands, acrylics, thermoforming sheets) and place material orders to prevent production delays.
