Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Evaluate new and returning patients in clinic and hospital settings, obtain detailed histories, perform focused musculoskeletal examinations, and synthesize findings into clear assessment and plan statements that guide conservative and operative care.
  • Diagnose a wide spectrum of orthopaedic conditions using clinical assessment and advanced imaging interpretation (X-ray, CT, MRI), integrating findings to recommend evidence-based treatment pathways including non-operative management, injections, bracing, or surgery.
  • Perform complex orthopaedic surgical procedures such as total joint arthroplasty (hip, knee, shoulder), arthroscopic surgery, open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of fractures, and revision procedures with meticulous technique to minimize complications and optimize functional outcomes.
  • Provide perioperative management including preoperative optimization, risk assessment, informed consent, postoperative pain control, DVT prophylaxis, early mobilization strategies, and coordinated discharge planning to reduce length of stay and readmissions.
  • Lead trauma call responsibilities by triaging acute musculoskeletal injuries, performing emergent or urgent operative interventions, and coordinating care with emergency medicine, anesthesiology, and critical care teams to stabilize polytrauma patients.
  • Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows through bedside teaching, operative instruction, case conferences, and structured educational curricula; provide timely and constructive feedback to trainees to support competency development.
  • Manage outpatient follow-up, casts and splints, wound checks, and rehabilitation planning while collaborating with physical and occupational therapy to individualize recovery protocols and maximize patient function.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary conferences (tumor boards, complex case reviews, joint arthroplasty meetings) to align surgical plans with medical oncology, radiology, rehabilitation, and nursing for comprehensive patient care.
  • Complete accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) including operative reports, clinic notes, procedure consents, discharge summaries, and billing-friendly coding with appropriate ICD-10 and CPT descriptors.
  • Lead quality improvement and patient safety initiatives by reviewing outcomes and complications, implementing standardized care pathways (e.g., ERAS for joint replacement), and measuring performance against institutional benchmarks.
  • Review and interpret advanced imaging and intraoperative findings, determine implant selection and fixation strategies, and order appropriate laboratory and consultative testing to manage comorbidities and surgical risk.
  • Coordinate with outpatient clinics, schedulers, and surgical coordinators to ensure efficient case flow, appropriate pre-op testing, and patient education to decrease cancellations and improve satisfaction.
  • Communicate complex diagnoses, surgical indications, risks, benefits, and postoperative expectations clearly and compassionately to patients and families, ensuring shared decision-making and informed consent.
  • Maintain surgical privileges, participate in peer review and credentialing processes, and adhere to hospital policies, state medical board requirements, and specialty society guidelines to preserve high standards of professional practice.
  • Provide leadership in device selection, implant tracking, and inventory management in collaboration with supply chain and OR management to optimize cost-effectiveness without compromising care quality.
  • Participate in clinical research, quality metrics reporting, and registries (e.g., joint replacement registries), including patient enrollment, data collection, and dissemination of outcomes through presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Provide telemedicine consultations and virtual follow-up appointments when appropriate to improve access to care, triage urgent issues, and maintain continuity of care for remote or post-op patients.
  • Respond to inpatient consultations from internal medicine, neurology, oncology, and other services regarding musculoskeletal issues and provide recommendations for conservative or surgical interventions while coordinating specialty co-management.
  • Mentor junior surgeons and lead faculty development activities, including case reviews, morbidity and mortality conferences, and simulation-based surgical skills training to elevate team expertise across the department.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control protocols, perioperative antibiotic stewardship, and surgical site infection prevention measures through standardized checklists, team education, and postoperative surveillance.
  • Participate in community outreach, referring physician relationships, and patient education programs to build program volume, reputation, and public awareness of orthopaedic services.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.

  • Valid state medical license and current DEA registration.

Preferred Education:

  • Fellowship training in a subspecialty such as Adult Reconstruction/Arthroplasty, Orthopaedic Trauma, Sports Medicine, Spine, or Hand Surgery.
  • Board certification in Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS or equivalent).
