Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Lead multi-day and single-day outdoor adventures (hiking, backpacking, climbing, canyoneering, whitewater rafting, kayaking, mountain biking) for diverse client groups while maintaining a high standard of guest experience, safety, and program pacing.
- Conduct comprehensive trip planning and route selection using topographic maps, GPS, weather forecasts, and local knowledge to design appropriate itineraries that meet client abilities and organizational objectives.
- Perform pre-trip briefings that clearly communicate trip goals, safety protocols, expected behaviors, Leave No Trace principles, and emergency procedures to all participants.
- Execute advanced risk assessment and risk management strategies in remote and dynamic environments, making real-time decisions to mitigate hazards such as weather, river conditions, rockfall, and wildlife encounters.
- Deliver interpretive education on local ecology, geology, cultural history, and conservation practices to enrich guest experience and promote environmental stewardship.
- Provide expert technical instruction in outdoor skills such as rope systems, top-rope and trad belaying, anchor building, safe rock climbing techniques, and technical descents appropriate to the activity.
- Manage client safety and first response by administering first aid and emergency medical care consistent with Wilderness First Responder (WFR) or higher certification, including casualty stabilization and coordination of evacuations when necessary.
- Navigate complex terrain using map and compass, GPS devices, and route-finding techniques to keep groups on course and on schedule in backcountry settings.
- Maintain composure and leadership under stress, resolving group dynamics issues, de-escalating conflicts, and adapting programming to shifting participant needs or environmental conditions.
- Conduct daily safety checks and maintenance on technical equipment (boats, paddles, climbing hardware, harnesses, carabiners, ropes, helmets) and ensure all gear meets regulatory and company standards prior to departure.
- Execute vehicle and trailer loading/unloading, ensure proper transport of gear and guests, and follow organization vehicle safety policies including pre-trip inspections and secure storage of hazardous materials.
- Liaise with local land managers, permitting agencies, and private landowners to secure permits, comply with regulations, and maintain positive stakeholder relationships for current and future operations.
- Keep accurate and timely trip reports, incident logs, client feedback records, and inventory tracking using digital systems or company reporting templates.
- Mentor, train, and evaluate junior guides and seasonal staff on technical skills, guest service standards, emergency procedures, and company culture to maintain a high-performing team.
- Adapt programming for special populations (youth groups, corporate teams, adaptive athletes, school groups), modifying activities to ensure accessibility, inclusion, and positive outcomes for all participants.
- Monitor and model Leave No Trace and sustainability practices, leading group efforts in low-impact camping, human waste management, and campsite selection to protect natural resources.
- Enforce safety rules and company policies consistently, including personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, floatation device usage, and group ratio compliance.
- Provide personalized coaching and skill progression for clients, offering constructive feedback, technical demonstrations, and confidence-building strategies to improve participant ability and enjoyment.
- Conduct environmental hazard monitoring (avalanche conditions, high water, local closures) and coordinate with guides and management to implement trip cancellations, reroutes, or emergency responses when warranted.
- Lead high-quality customer service interactions from booking through trip completion: responding to client inquiries, providing pre-trip logistics, packing lists, and post-trip follow-up to secure repeat business and positive reviews.
- Implement COVID-19 or infectious disease mitigation plans as required, including sanitation protocols, distancing adjustments, and contingency planning for ill participants.
- Participate in on-call rotation for emergency evacuations, incident response, and interagency support when organized by employer or local authorities.
Secondary Functions
