Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and facilitate high-quality experiential outdoor education sessions for groups of children, teens, college students, and adult learners, adapting instructional methods to diverse learning needs and program goals.
  • Develop, refine, and implement curriculum and lesson plans that integrate environmental science, ecology, leadership, team-building, and open-air classroom pedagogy aligned with learning objectives and school standards.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute day trips and multi-day expeditions (camping, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, climbing) including route selection, permit acquisition, food planning, campsite selection, and contingency planning.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-trip and on-site risk assessments and implement safety protocols, emergency action plans, and incident reporting procedures to mitigate hazards in remote and urban outdoor settings.
  • Deliver clear, engaging safety briefings and operational instructions for activities such as ropes courses, climbing, belaying, kayaking/canoeing, and backcountry travel to ensure participant safety and confidence.
  • Administer first aid, CPR, and wilderness medicine interventions as required during programming; manage injuries and coordinate emergency evacuations with external medical services when necessary.
  • Inspect, maintain, repair, store, and track inventory of outdoor equipment (tents, backpacks, harnesses, helmets, paddles, ropes, quickdraws, carabiners) and ensure compliance with manufacturer and industry inspection standards.
  • Facilitate group cohesion and positive group dynamics using intentional facilitation techniques to mediate conflict, reinforce behavior expectations, and cultivate leadership and resilience among participants.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise seasonal staff, volunteers, and intern instructors, providing ongoing feedback, coaching, and formal evaluations to elevate instructional quality and program consistency.
  • Deliver interpretive nature programming and place-based education that teaches local ecology, natural history, cultural history, and conservation ethics, promoting an ethic of stewardship and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Evaluate participant learning outcomes using formative and summative assessment tools, reflect on sessions, and prepare written reports and recommendations for continuous program improvement.
  • Coordinate logistics with partner schools, youth organizations, parents/guardians, and community stakeholders including scheduling, transportation, permission slips, and pre-trip communication.
  • Maintain accurate participant records, incident reports, attendance logs, equipment checklists, and program metrics required for internal reporting and grant compliance.
  • Design and deliver professional development workshops for teachers and partner organizations on outdoor classroom integration, student-centered outdoor pedagogy, and risk management best practices.
  • Operate organization vehicles and coordinate transportation of people and equipment safely; maintain accurate driving logs and ensure vehicle maintenance and licensing requirements are met.
  • Implement inclusive programming strategies to accommodate participants with diverse abilities, cultural backgrounds, and learning needs, including individualized risk assessments and adaptation of activities.
  • Support fundraising, grant-writing, and program marketing efforts by contributing program descriptions, impact summaries, and facilitating site visits for donors and partners.
  • Ensure program compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, facility permits, accreditation standards (where applicable), and organizational policies for student safety and staff conduct.
  • Monitor and maintain site infrastructure and facilities (trails, campsites, climbing areas, shelters, ropes course elements) and coordinate repairs, seasonal maintenance, and third-party inspections as needed.
  • Facilitate reflective processing and debrief sessions after activities to help participants integrate experiential learning, set transferable goals, and measure growth in leadership, teamwork, and environmental literacy.
  • Configure and use navigation tools (map, compass, GPS), weather forecasting resources, and leave-behind conservation measures to plan safe and ecologically responsible routes and activities.
  • Participate in curriculum reviews, strategic planning meetings, and staff training to align programs with emerging best practices in outdoor education, diversity/equity/inclusion, and climate resilience education.
  • Promote a positive, professional public face for the organization by representing the program at schools, community events, and conferences; responding to inquiries; and fostering partnerships that expand access to outdoor learning.

Secondary Functions

  • Support outreach and recruitment by presenting program offerings to schools, community groups, and funders to grow program participation and strategic partnerships.
  • Collect program evaluation data, contribute to impact reports, and use participant feedback to enhance curriculum alignment with learning outcomes and funder requirements.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for off-hours emergencies and program-related incidents; maintain up-to-date certifications and documentation for credentialing bodies.
  • Assist with seasonal staffing logistics including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and payroll coordination as required by program needs.
  • Support facility rental coordination and site scheduling for third-party groups, managing calendars and ensuring safe use of shared resources.
  • Contribute to social media, website copy, and promotional materials by providing content, photos (with permissions), and program narratives for marketing and donor engagement.
  • Help develop and maintain partnerships with local land managers, conservation organizations, and municipal agencies to secure access and ensure responsible use of natural areas.
  • Provide ad-hoc administrative support, including purchasing and inventory reconciliation, supply ordering, and vendor outreach for equipment and food procurement.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, program retreats, and cross-functional planning to share lessons learned and integrate feedback across program areas.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder (WFR), or equivalent wilderness medicine certification with demonstrated experience applying protocols in the field.
  • Current CPR/AED certification and ability to perform life-saving interventions; preferred training in Emergency Medical Response or EMT background.
  • Technical ropes course and climbing proficiency: belaying, top-rope and lead basics, anchor building, knot tying, and basic rigging (AMGA/industry-aligned certification preferred).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; demonstrated outdoor leadership experience may substitute for formal education in some roles.
