Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide continuous, hands-on monitoring and nursing care for hospitalized and postoperative patients overnight, including frequent reassessments of pain, mentation, respiratory and cardiovascular status, and wound or surgical incision sites.
  • Triage incoming emergency patients, rapidly assess clinical severity, prioritize treatments, and initiate stabilization measures (oxygen therapy, IV access, fluid resuscitation, hemorrhage control) under veterinarian guidance.
  • Place, maintain, and troubleshoot peripheral and multi-lumen IV catheters and central venous access when indicated, ensuring patency, aseptic technique, and appropriate documentation of IV fluid rates and additives.
  • Administer prescribed medications, controlled substances, and fluids accurately by multiple routes (IV, IM, SC, oral, CRI) while documenting dose, route, time, and patient response in the electronic medical record.
  • Set up and monitor continuous rate infusions (CRIs), adjust rates per veterinarian orders, and recognize and respond appropriately to signs of fluid overload, catheter complications, or adverse drug reactions.
  • Provide anesthesia and sedation support for emergency surgeries and procedures: induction, intubation, endotracheal tube placement, ventilator/oxygen management, intraoperative monitoring, and recovery support.
  • Perform and interpret point-of-care diagnostics including blood glucose, blood gas, electrolytes, PCV/TS, SNAP tests, cytology, and prepare/handle samples for external lab submission.
  • Run in-house lab assays (CBC, chemistry, coagulation tests) and prepare blood smears, serum/plasma, and urine samples; communicate abnormal results promptly to the supervising veterinarian.
  • Acquire diagnostic imaging support: properly position patients, restrain and monitor patients during radiographs, and assist with digital image acquisition and basic viewing for clinician review.
  • Provide advanced life support and emergency interventions including BLS/CPR, chest compressions, emergency drug preparation and administration, chest tube management, and monitoring defibrillator/oxygen equipment when required.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical records and shift handoff notes in the practice management system, including detailed overnight observations, treatment logs, and discharge preparation notes.
  • Execute aseptic technique for wound management, bandage changes, catheter care, and drain maintenance, and assist veterinarians with minor surgical procedures as needed overnight.
  • Prepare, transport, and monitor blood products for transfusions, perform crossmatches when required, and monitor transfusion patients closely for reactions.
  • Manage oxygen therapy and respiratory support devices including flow-by oxygen, oxygen cages, nasal cannulae, and mechanical ventilation assistance; monitor oxygen saturation and respiratory effort.
  • Coordinate with overnight veterinarians to prioritize caseload, escalate care for deteriorating patients, and follow veterinarian-directed treatment plans with independence.
  • Respond to emergency calls and urgent client communications overnight in a calm, professional manner; provide accurate status reports and client updates under veterinarian direction.
  • Ensure all necessary overnight supplies, medications, and emergency crash carts are stocked, functional, and checked per protocol at shift start and end.
  • Operate and troubleshoot monitoring equipment (ECG, capnography, pulse oximetry, blood pressure monitors, infusion pumps) and escalate equipment failures immediately.
  • Participate in sedation/anesthesia recovery monitoring to identify complications early and intervene appropriately, including pain scoring and multimodal analgesia administration.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate degree in Veterinary Technology (AVT) or completed Veterinary Technician program OR equivalent practical experience as a clinical veterinary technician.
