Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Analyze and evaluate existing packaging designs and materials to identify and execute opportunities for cost reduction, material consolidation, and performance enhancement.
- Develop, coordinate, and execute comprehensive packaging test plans, such as ISTA and ASTM protocols, to validate the integrity and performance of new or revised packaging systems.
- Conduct in-depth cost-benefit analyses for proposed packaging changes, presenting clear business cases that account for material, labor, freight, and potential damage reduction savings.
- Create, manage, and meticulously maintain a centralized database of detailed packaging specifications, component drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) within ERP systems like SAP or Oracle.
- Lead or provide significant analytical support to cross-functional packaging projects, managing timelines, resources, and stakeholder communication from ideation through to implementation.
- Drive corporate sustainability initiatives by researching, testing, and recommending environmentally friendly packaging alternatives, focusing on recyclability, recycled content, and source reduction.
- Design and optimize pallet patterns and truckload configurations using software (e.g., TOPS, Cape Pack) to maximize cube utilization, improve shipping efficiency, and lower transportation costs.
- Collaborate closely with suppliers and vendors to source new materials, negotiate component pricing, and ensure that all incoming packaging meets stringent quality and performance standards.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) for packaging-related damages, quality failures, or customer complaints.
- Stay informed of current industry trends, emerging materials, automation technologies, and evolving regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, EPR, plastic taxes) that impact the packaging landscape.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) projects by providing packaging expertise and developing robust solutions that meet unique product, brand, and channel requirements.
- Manage the complete packaging component qualification process, including first article inspections, line trials at manufacturing facilities, and final engineering approvals.
- Provide clear and actionable data-driven insights to leadership and other departments regarding packaging performance, project status, and cost-saving initiatives.
- Model the impact of packaging changes on the entire supply chain, including effects on warehousing, material handling, co-packing, and final-mile delivery.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal stakeholders, including Marketing, R&D, Operations, Quality Assurance, and Procurement teams.

- Material Science Knowledge: Deep understanding of a wide range of packaging materials, including corrugate, films, flexibles, glass, and rigid plastics, and their applications.
- Testing & Validation: Hands-on experience with industry-standard testing protocols (ISTA, ASTM) and the ability to interpret test results to make informed decisions.
- Data Analysis & Modeling: High proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, complex formulas, modeling) and experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI) is a plus.
