Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead the comprehensive design, development, and qualification of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging systems from concept ideation through to full-scale commercialization.
  • Develop and execute detailed test plans and validation protocols (e.g., ISTA, ASTM) to rigorously assess package performance, product protection, and shipment integrity under various simulated distribution environments.
  • Create and maintain precise packaging specifications, technical drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and assembly instructions to ensure consistent quality and execution across global manufacturing sites.
  • Drive cost-saving initiatives by identifying opportunities for material reduction, process optimization, pallet and container utilization, and alternative supplier qualification without compromising quality or performance.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Product Design, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and Supply Chain to ensure packaging solutions meet all stakeholder requirements.
  • Manage multiple packaging development projects simultaneously, establishing timelines, defining deliverables, managing budgets, and communicating project status to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Investigate and resolve packaging-related issues originating from the manufacturing floor, distribution centers, or customer feedback, implementing effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Conduct thorough material research and selection for all packaging components, evaluating polymers, corrugated board, films, adhesives, and cushioning for performance, cost, and sustainability.
  • Design and engineer custom packaging solutions for new product introductions (NPIs), ensuring they are optimized for manufacturing efficiency, automation, and ergonomic handling.
  • Champion and integrate sustainability goals into packaging design, focusing on recyclability, source reduction, use of post-consumer recycled content, and elimination of problematic materials.
  • Perform and analyze pallet pattern optimization and container load efficiency using software like CAPE or TOPS to maximize shipping density and reduce transportation costs and carbon footprint.
  • Partner with the Sourcing and Procurement teams to identify, audit, and qualify new packaging material suppliers, ensuring a robust and competitive supply base.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to manufacturing operations during the implementation of new packaging lines, equipment validation (IQ/OQ/PQ), and process scale-up.
  • Ensure all packaging designs and materials are in full compliance with relevant domestic and international regulations, including those for food contact, medical devices, or hazardous materials.
  • Develop prototypes and facilitate user-experience studies with Marketing and consumer-insights teams to validate packaging functionality, aesthetics, and ease of use.
  • Create and manage a packaging component library and database to streamline development processes and leverage existing qualified materials for new projects.
  • Author comprehensive technical reports, validation summaries, and project documentation to support regulatory submissions and maintain historical records for future reference.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, materials, and trends within the packaging industry to drive continuous innovation and maintain a competitive advantage.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for product damage claims, utilizing data to identify failure points in the packaging or distribution network and implementing robust solutions.
  • Lead packaging-related continuous improvement projects using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to enhance quality, reduce waste, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Secondary Functions

  • Support marketing and graphic design teams by providing technical guidance on the manufacturability of proposed artwork and structural designs.
  • Contribute to the organization's long-term sustainability strategy and public-facing environmental goals.
  • Collaborate with the technical writing team to develop clear and concise end-user instructions for product assembly and unboxing.
  • Participate in supplier business reviews and performance evaluations to foster strong partnerships and drive improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CAD Software Proficiency: Expertise in 2D and 3D design software (e.g., SolidWorks, ArtiosCAD, AutoCAD) for creating detailed structural designs and technical drawings.
  • Packaging Testing Standards: Deep knowledge of industry-standard test protocols, particularly ISTA and ASTM, for transit simulation and material property testing.
  • Material Science: Strong understanding of the properties, applications, and limitations of common packaging materials like corrugated fiberboard, paperboard, flexible films, rigid plastics, and cushioning foams.
  • Palletization Software: Competency in using pallet and load optimization software (e.g., CAPE Pack, TOPS Pro) to maximize shipping efficiency.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in a relevant technical field.

  • Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) designation from the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP).
