Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceive and create original fragrance concepts and accords from brief to final formula, translating marketing and client briefs into targeted olfactive solutions with clear positioning, performance goals and cost constraints.
  • Formulate, refine and optimize fragrances for multiple delivery systems (alcoholic fine fragrance, eau de toilette, deodorant aerosols, body lotions, shampoos, fabric care liquids, laundry detergents, homecare sprays) ensuring volatility, longevity and top/middle/base balance appropriate to each matrix.
  • Conduct hands‑on olfactory evaluation and sensory profiling throughout NPD cycles, using structured scoring systems and descriptive language to document scent character, intensity, evolution and consumer appeal.
  • Lead stability and performance testing of fragrances under accelerated and real‑time conditions (temperature, light exposure, humidity), interpret results and reformulate to resolve degradation, color change or loss of top notes.
  • Perform analytical characterization of raw materials and finished fragrance compositions using GC-MS, GC-O, HPLC and headspace techniques to identify key volatiles, impurities and potential off-notes that impact aroma quality and safety.
  • Apply IFRA, REACH, EU Cosmetic Regulation and global labeling requirements to ensure formulations comply with composition limits, allergens, and country-specific regulations; prepare regulatory dossiers and assist regulatory affairs teams.
  • Manage cost-of-goods and raw material budget targets by selecting alternative materials, optimizing dosages and negotiating specifications with suppliers while maintaining olfactive intent and performance.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with marketing, packaging, R&D, operations and sales to align fragrance concepts with brand strategy, product claims, fill lines and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Lead pilot trials and scale-up activities with manufacturing to transition bench-scale formulations to plant production, troubleshoot issues related to mixing, stability, batch variation and raw material substitutions.
  • Maintain and curate a comprehensive fragrance library, reference standards and sample tracking system; archive formula versions, sample histories and sensory notes for knowledge continuity.
  • Source, evaluate and qualify new aroma chemicals and naturals through supplier relationships, sample evaluation, cost analysis and sustainability impact assessments (e.g., sourcing traceability, renewable content).
  • Prepare detailed technical documentation, client presentations and sample kits for internal stakeholders, external partners, retail customers and regulatory submissions.
  • Provide fragrance technical support to sales and account teams during client pitches, custom fragrance development, troubleshooting and after-sales follow-up, ensuring rapid resolution and client satisfaction.
  • Lead or participate in consumer and expert panel testing, translating quantitative and qualitative feedback into actionable reformulation or positioning decisions.
  • Champion sustainability and green chemistry initiatives within fragrance development by evaluating natural alternatives, biodegradability, carbon footprint and compliance with internal sustainability criteria.
  • Train, mentor and review the development work of junior perfumers, evaluators and laboratory technicians; provide ongoing olfactory training, constructive feedback and career development guidance.
  • Protect intellectual property by documenting creative processes, maintaining confidentiality of proprietary accords and collaborating with legal teams to file trademarks or patents when appropriate.
  • Monitor fragrance market trends, competitive launches, cultural scent movements and emerging ingredients to inspire innovation and keep the portfolio relevant to consumer demand.
  • Implement rigorous quality control checkpoints during sample production, ensuring consistency between trial batches and final production runs; investigate out-of-spec results and implement corrective actions.
  • Drive project timelines and deliverables as project lead on fragrance briefs, coordinating resources, managing third-party labs and suppliers, forecasting sample needs and communicating status to stakeholders.
  • Evaluate interactions between fragrance and packaging materials (e.g., liners, closures, cards) to prevent scent absorption, migration or contamination that undermines product performance.
  • Create and present costed formulation options and modulation strategies to stakeholders, demonstrating trade-offs between olfactive quality, stability and price points.
  • Maintain awareness of occupational health and safety standards in handling aroma chemicals, ensuring safe storage, labeling, handling protocols and disposal procedures in the lab.

  • Support ad-hoc technical and sensory data requests from marketing and business units, generating clear analysis and recommended next steps.
  • Contribute to the organization's fragrance innovation roadmap, ideation workshops and annual scent direction planning.
  • Partner with procurement and supplier quality teams to audit suppliers, validate raw material certificates and ensure continuity of supply.
  • Coordinate with analytical chemistry teams to validate methods for fragrance performance and headspace profiling specific to complex matrices.
  • Assist in developing training modules and scent language guidelines for non-technical stakeholders to improve product storytelling and line extensions.
  • Maintain sample inventory and manage logistics for sending high-quality fragrance samples to clients and cross-functional teams to meet project timelines.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Cosmetic Science, Food Science, or equivalent technical degree with demonstrated fragrance experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Perfume school diploma (e.g., ISIPCA, Grasse programs, Firmenich/Givaudan internal perfumery apprenticeships) or Master’s degree in Olfactory Science/Cosmetic Science.
  • Additional certifications in regulatory affairs or sensory science are a plus.
