Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Skillfully operate manual and automated powder coating spray guns to apply a uniform and durable finish to a wide range of metal parts and components.
- Meticulously prepare surfaces for coating, utilizing techniques such as sandblasting, media blasting, degreasing, chemical washing, and masking to ensure optimal adhesion.
- Perform rigorous quality control inspections on all finished parts, checking for consistent color, texture, and proper mil thickness using gauges and visual assessment.
- Read and precisely interpret work orders, blueprints, and technical specifications to determine coating requirements, colors, and specific application techniques.
- Set up, operate, and monitor all powder coating equipment, including spray booths, reclamation systems, and curing ovens, adjusting parameters as needed.
- Load and unload parts from the production line and curing ovens, ensuring proper handling to prevent damage to uncured and finished surfaces.
- Conduct routine and preventative maintenance on all finishing equipment, including cleaning spray guns, nozzles, booths, and filters to ensure peak performance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve common coating defects such as orange peel, fisheyes, and inconsistent thickness to minimize rework and scrap.
- Execute efficient color changes within the powder booth, minimizing downtime and preventing cross-contamination between colors.
- Perform necessary touch-ups and rework on parts that do not meet strict quality standards, ensuring every product is flawless.
- Expertly mask, plug, or cap specific sections of parts to protect them from the coating process as per engineering drawings.
- Monitor oven temperatures and conveyor line speeds to ensure parts are cured correctly according to powder manufacturer specifications.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean, safe, and highly organized work area by adhering to 5S principles and company safety protocols.
- Strictly follow all environmental and safety guidelines for the proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals, powders, and waste materials.
- Manage and maintain an accurate inventory of powder coatings, chemicals, and other essential supplies, notifying supervisors of replenishment needs.
- Collaborate effectively with team members from fabrication, welding, and assembly departments to ensure a smooth and efficient production workflow.
- Document production data, including parts coated, colors used, and any quality issues, in daily production logs or a manufacturing execution system (MES).
- Actively participate in continuous improvement projects aimed at increasing efficiency, reducing waste, and enhancing overall product quality.
- Assist in the cross-training of new or less experienced technicians on equipment operation, safety procedures, and quality standards.
- Safely operate a forklift or pallet jack to transport raw materials and finished goods throughout the facility as needed.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 1-3+ years of direct experience in an industrial or manufacturing powder coating role.
Preferred:
- Experience in a high-volume, fast-paced manufacturing or job shop environment.
- Familiarity with a variety of substrates (e.g., steel, aluminum) and powder chemistries.
- NACE, SSPC, or other relevant coating certifications are a significant plus.
