Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform intricate assembly of components and sub-assemblies with high precision, following detailed blueprints, schematics, and standard operating procedures.
  • Expertly utilize a variety of precision measurement tools, including digital calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and height gauges, to verify parts and assemblies meet strict tolerance requirements.
  • Operate a wide range of hand tools (wrenches, files, drivers) and power tools (drills, grinders, sanders, saws) with exceptional skill and a focus on safety to fabricate, modify, and finish materials.
  • Conduct first-piece, in-process, and final quality control inspections to proactively identify and correct any deviations from engineering specifications and quality standards.
  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, work orders, and technical manuals to fully understand project requirements, material specifications, and assembly sequences.
  • Handle, move, and position raw materials, in-process components, and finished products carefully, often utilizing hoists, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate light-to-medium machinery, such as drill presses, band saws, or grinders, for basic fabrication and modification tasks.
  • Perform meticulous surface preparation tasks, including cleaning, sanding, deburring, polishing, and masking, to ensure proper fit, adhesion, and finishing.
  • Maintain an exceptionally clean, organized, and safe work environment by consistently adhering to 5S principles, lean manufacturing concepts, and all company safety protocols.
  • Accurately document all work performed, including measurements, materials consumed, and inspection results, in production logs or a digital manufacturing execution system (MES).
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, quality assurance personnel, and supervisors to troubleshoot production issues and contribute to root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Mix and apply adhesives, epoxies, paints, and other chemical compounds according to precise manufacturer specifications and while adhering to all safety data sheet (SDS) guidelines.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure they remain in optimal, calibrated working condition, and promptly report any malfunctions.
  • Assist in the on-the-job training and mentoring of junior laborers or new team members on standard operating procedures, quality checks, and safety practices.
  • Carefully pack and prepare finished products for shipment, ensuring they are adequately protected against damage and correctly labeled according to customer or internal requirements.
  • Closely monitor production processes to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, waste reduction, and increased efficiency.
  • Perform precise cutting, shaping, and fitting of various materials, such as metal, plastic, wood, or composites, to exact dimensions specified in work orders.
  • Calibrate and adjust fixtures, jigs, and equipment to ensure they are set to the correct parameters for a specific production run.
  • Work effectively as a proactive member of a production team to meet demanding schedules and collective quality targets without ever compromising safety standards.
  • Execute final functional testing procedures on completed assemblies to verify performance and ensure they meet all operational criteria before being released.
  • Manage the inventory of small parts, hardware, and consumables within the work cell, communicating restocking needs to supervisors to prevent production delays.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in Kaizen events and continuous improvement workshops to help refine manufacturing processes.
  • Assist the maintenance team with minor equipment repairs and troubleshooting under their guidance.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for new or revised processes.
  • Uphold all environmental and safety regulations, including proper disposal of waste materials and chemicals.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Deep understanding of technical drawings, including dimensions, symbols, and notes.
  • Precision Measurement & Metrology: Proficient in the use of calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and other inspection tools to verify tolerances down to the thousandth of an inch.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-5 years of demonstrated experience in a manufacturing, fabrication, or skilled assembly environment.

Preferred: Experience in a regulated industry such as aerospace, medical device, or automotive manufacturing is highly advantageous. Verifiable experience working to tight tolerances and interpreting complex blueprints is often required.
