Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Diligently assist senior operators with the setup, calibration, and operation of a diverse range of printing equipment, including digital presses, large-format inkjet printers, and screen-printing machines.
- Execute a variety of post-press finishing tasks with a high degree of precision, such as guillotine cutting, creasing, folding, collating, saddle-stitching, and perfect binding.
- Operate finishing machinery including laminators, die-cutters, UV coaters, and mounting equipment to complete projects according to detailed specifications.
- Conduct meticulous quality control checks at all stages of production, from reviewing pre-press proofs to inspecting the final output for color accuracy, registration, and defects.
- Proactively monitor print jobs as they run, making minor adjustments under supervision to maintain consistency and prevent waste.
- Carefully load and unload various media and substrates into printers, ensuring proper handling to avoid damage and an accurate setup for each job.
- Interpret complex job tickets and work orders to fully understand project requirements, including quantity, stock type, color profiles, and finishing instructions.
- Prepare and pre-flight customer-supplied digital files for print readiness, identifying potential issues like low-resolution images, missing fonts, or incorrect color modes.
- Manage the workflow of multiple small to medium-sized projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks effectively to meet tight and often competing deadlines.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area around all machinery, adhering to company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines at all times.
- Carefully package and prepare finished print jobs for shipping or customer pickup, ensuring products are protected from damage and all order components are accurately included.
- Perform routine cleaning, lubrication, and basic preventative maintenance on printing and finishing equipment to ensure optimal performance and report any malfunctions to the production manager.
Secondary Functions
- Support the inventory management of print consumables, including paper stock, inks, toners, and finishing supplies, and communicate reorder needs to prevent production delays.
- Assist in maintaining accurate production logs, recording material usage, job completion times, and any issues encountered for future reference and process improvement.
- Collaborate with the customer service and sales teams to clarify job specifications and provide status updates on active projects.
- Learn to operate RIP (Raster Image Processor) software to process and queue jobs for various digital printing devices.
- Gain proficiency in color management principles and use spectrophotometers or other tools to ensure color consistency across different devices and substrates.
- Assist with bindery and mailing services, including tasks like inserting, tabbing, and sorting for direct mail campaigns.
