Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and meticulously maintain a range of large-format and small-format digital printers, including but not limited to UV flatbed, latex, solvent, and aqueous printers.
  • Manage the print queue effectively to prioritize jobs based on deadlines, materials, and client requirements, ensuring an efficient workflow.
  • Perform pre-flight checks on all incoming artwork and files, identifying and correcting potential issues such as low resolution, incorrect color profiles, or formatting errors.
  • Utilize Raster Image Processor (RIP) software (e.g., Onyx, Caldera, Fiery) to process files, manage color, and optimize print settings for various substrates.
  • Conduct regular color calibration and profiling on all printing equipment to ensure consistent and accurate color reproduction across all jobs.
  • Perform rigorous quality control checks throughout the printing process, from the first article to the final output, to guarantee all products meet company and client standards.
  • Execute routine and preventative maintenance on printing equipment, including cleaning print heads, checking fluid levels, and troubleshooting minor mechanical issues to minimize downtime.
  • Log and document all maintenance activities, service calls, and material usage accurately for inventory and reporting purposes.
  • Interpret work orders, job tickets, and specifications to determine the correct setup, materials, and finishing requirements for each project.
  • Safely handle and load a diverse range of print media and substrates, from flexible vinyl and banners to rigid materials like acrylic, foam board, and metal.
  • Monitor print production closely to identify and resolve any print artifacts, banding, or color shifts in real-time.
  • Collaborate directly with the design and prepress teams to troubleshoot problematic files and suggest improvements for printability.
  • Manage inventory levels of inks, substrates, and other printing supplies, placing orders as needed to prevent production delays.
  • Prepare finished prints for the next stage of production, which may include trimming, weeding, laminating, or mounting.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the finishing department with tasks such as lamination, CNC routing, vinyl application, and mounting during peak production periods.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and suggesting enhancements to production workflows, safety procedures, and quality control processes.
  • Participate in the testing and evaluation of new substrates, inks, and printing technologies to expand our service offerings.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by adhering to all company safety protocols and 5S principles.
  • Provide clear and concise updates on job status, material shortages, or equipment issues to production managers and project coordinators.
  • Assist in training junior technicians or new team members on equipment operation, software use, and safety best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Digital Printing Equipment: Proficient operation of large-format printers (e.g., HP, Epson, Vutek, Canon, Agfa) and digital presses.
  • RIP Software: In-depth experience with industry-standard RIP software such as Onyx, Caldera, Fiery, or Wasatch.
  • Adobe Creative Suite: Strong working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign for file inspection and minor adjustments.
  • Color Management: Solid understanding of color theory, ICC profiles, and hands-on experience with spectrophotometers for color calibration.
  • Finishing Techniques: Familiarity with print finishing processes including lamination, mounting, vinyl cutting/plotting, and trimming.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Proven ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot common technical issues with printing equipment.
  • Substrate Knowledge: Experience working with a wide variety of flexible and rigid print media.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree or a technical certificate in Printing Technology, Graphic Design, or a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5 years of direct, hands-on experience in a commercial or production printing environment.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience specifically with large-format digital printing, advanced color management, and a variety of finishing techniques. Experience in a sign shop or large-scale graphics production facility is a significant plus.
