Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Set up and operate multi-color offset, flexographic, or digital printing presses in accordance with the job ticket and production schedule.
- Perform complete press make-readies, including mounting plates, loading paper, and setting up ink fountains, to ensure jobs are ready for production.
- Continuously monitor press operations to maintain consistent print quality, registration, and color accuracy throughout the production run.
- Make precise adjustments to press settings, such as ink flow, water balance, and roller pressure, to correct any deviations from quality standards.
- Conduct thorough quality control checks at various stages of the print run, comparing printed sheets against proofs to ensure they meet all specifications.
- Interpret job orders to determine the correct stocks, inks, and other supplies needed for each project.
- Manage and troubleshoot mechanical and technical issues with the press, performing routine preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance.
- Clean ink fountains, plates, and rollers meticulously between jobs to prevent color contamination and maintain equipment integrity.
- Maintain an accurate log of production activities, including run times, material usage, and any encountered issues, for reporting and inventory purposes.
- Blend and mix inks to match specific Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors or custom color requirements as specified by the client.
- Ensure all safety protocols are strictly followed, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to machine guarding standards.
- Work closely with the prepress department to verify files and plates are correct before starting a run.
- Collaborate with the finishing and bindery departments to ensure a smooth transition of printed materials to the next stage of production.
- Manage substrate inventory at the press, ensuring an adequate supply is available and properly handled to prevent damage.
- Optimize press speed and efficiency to meet or exceed established production goals without compromising quality.
- Identify and resolve print defects such as hickeys, ghosting, mottling, and slurring through skilled troubleshooting.
- Calibrate and maintain press-side densitometers and color measurement devices to ensure consistent color management.
- Assist in the training and development of Press Helpers and apprentices, sharing knowledge of best practices and safety procedures.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at reducing waste, increasing output, and enhancing overall plant efficiency.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance tasks as outlined in the equipment manufacturer's guidelines.
- Handle and dispose of pressroom chemicals and waste materials in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area around the press to prevent accidents and improve workflow.
- Communicate effectively with shift supervisors and team members regarding job status, equipment condition, and any production delays.
- Assist in inventory counts of pressroom supplies, including ink, chemicals, and spare parts.

Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Deep operational knowledge of specific printing presses (e.g., Heidelberg, Komori, Mark Andy, Gallus, HP Indigo).
- Expertise in color theory and color matching, with proficiency using the Pantone Matching System (PMS).
- Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of press equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret complex job tickets, layouts, and technical specifications.
- Proficiency in using measurement tools such as densitometers, spectrophotometers, and paper micrometers.
- Knowledge of various substrates (paper, vinyl, synthetics) and their behavior during the printing process.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of hands-on experience as a Printing Press Operator.
Preferred: 5+ years of experience operating multi-color offset or wide-web flexographic presses in a high-volume commercial printing environment. Experience as a Second Pressman or Lead Operator is highly desirable.
