Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough in-process and final inspections on assemblies and sub-assemblies to verify conformance to specifications, engineering drawings, and quality standards.
  • Perform detailed receiving inspections on incoming raw materials, components, and supplier parts to ensure they meet procurement requirements before entering the production flow.
  • Meticulously utilize a wide array of precision measuring instruments, such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges, and optical comparators, to validate dimensional accuracy.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, schematics, and work instructions, including a strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Generate, document, and manage Non-Conforming Reports (NCRs) for any parts or products that fail to meet the required specifications, and route them for disposition.
  • Approve finished products by confirming all specifications have been met and release them for shipment, completing the necessary final inspection documentation.
  • Maintain and manage the calibration program for all inspection, measuring, and test equipment to ensure their accuracy and reliability are consistently upheld.
  • Execute First Article Inspections (FAIs) in accordance with AS9102 or equivalent standards, verifying that production processes can reliably produce parts to specification.
  • Perform comprehensive visual inspections to identify cosmetic flaws, surface defects, workmanship errors, and other imperfections not captured by dimensional checks.
  • Maintain meticulous and organized records of all inspection results, test data, and quality activities in logs, databases, or a Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Collaborate directly with production personnel and supervisors to provide real-time feedback on quality issues and help troubleshoot manufacturing processes.
  • Quarantine and control non-conforming products to prevent their unintended use or shipment, ensuring proper segregation and identification.
  • Assist Quality and Manufacturing Engineers in conducting root cause analysis and implementing effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to resolve quality problems.
  • Operate advanced metrology equipment, such as a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) or a Vision System, for performing complex and highly precise measurements.
  • Verify that all required documentation, such as material certifications and certificates of conformance, is present and accurate for incoming and outgoing products.
  • Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) meetings to provide data and input on the disposition of non-conforming materials.
  • Audit production processes against work instructions and standard operating procedures to ensure consistent compliance and operational discipline.
  • Select and prepare appropriate inspection sample sizes based on established statistical sampling plans (e.g., AQL) to make data-driven acceptance decisions.
  • Create and update detailed inspection reports, summaries, and data packages for internal review and for submission to customers.
  • Actively monitor production lines to identify trends or potential quality issues before they result in widespread defects or process deviations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & GD&T Interpretation: The ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications, including a firm grasp of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing symbols.
  • Precision Metrology: Mastery of handheld measuring tools including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, protractors, and thread gauges for accurate dimensional verification.
  • CMM Operation: Experience programming and/or operating Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) or other advanced measurement systems (e.g., Vision Systems, Laser Scanners).
  • QMS & ERP Systems: Proficiency in using Quality Management System (QMS) software for documentation control and ERP systems for tracking materials and production status.
  • Root Cause Analysis Methodologies: Knowledge of problem-solving tools such as 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, or 8D to investigate the source of defects.
  • Non-Conformance Reporting (NCR): The ability to clearly and accurately document defects, including capturing photographic evidence and detailing deviations from specifications.
  • Knowledge of Industry Standards: Familiarity with quality system standards relevant to the industry, such as ISO 9001, AS9100 (aerospace), or ISO 13485 (medical devices).
  • Microsoft Office Proficiency: Competency in using Microsoft Excel for data entry and analysis, Word for report writing, and Outlook for communication.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's Degree in a technical field or a certification from a technical/vocational school.
  • American Society for Quality (ASQ) certification, such as Certified Quality Inspector (CQI).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-7 years of hands-on experience in a quality control inspection role within a relevant manufacturing environment.

Preferred: Direct experience in a regulated industry such as aerospace, medical device, automotive, or electronics manufacturing is highly advantageous. Experience in an ISO 9001 or similarly certified facility is strongly preferred.
