Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive first-article, in-process, and final inspections on components, sub-assemblies, and finished products using a variety of precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and CMMs.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, technical specifications, and 3D models to verify product conformity and ensure all dimensional and functional requirements are met.
  • Meticulously document inspection results, test data, and observations in quality logs, databases, and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) to maintain complete traceability and data integrity.
  • Initiate, document, and manage Non-Conforming Material Reports (NCMRs) for any products or materials that fail to meet established quality standards, and collaborate with engineering on disposition.
  • Perform thorough root cause analysis (RCA) on quality issues and product failures, utilizing methodologies like 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams, or 8D to identify the source of defects and prevent recurrence.
  • Calibrate and maintain inspection, measurement, and test equipment (IM&TE) according to a defined schedule, ensuring all tools are accurate, certified, and in good working order.
  • Develop and execute test procedures and protocols for new and existing products to validate performance, reliability, and safety against design specifications and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with production, engineering, and supply chain teams to communicate quality issues, provide real-time feedback, and drive continuous improvement initiatives on the manufacturing floor.
  • Actively participate in and support internal and external quality audits, including ISO 9001, AS9100, or IATF 16949, by providing documentation, records, and procedural evidence.
  • Create, revise, and update essential quality control documentation, including work instructions, inspection checklists, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent application of standards.
  • Monitor and analyze production processes and quality data using Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts and other analytical tools to identify negative trends and opportunities for process optimization.
  • Manage the quarantine and disposition of non-conforming materials, ensuring defective products are properly segregated, identified, and processed according to company procedures.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and guidance to production operators on quality standards, inspection techniques, and the proper use of measurement equipment to build a pervasive culture of quality.
  • Evaluate incoming raw materials and components from suppliers to ensure they meet procurement specifications and quality requirements before being released to the production line.
  • Conduct process capability studies (Cpk, Ppk) on manufacturing processes to assess their ability to consistently produce parts within specified tolerance limits.
  • Assist in the validation and qualification of new equipment, tooling, and manufacturing processes to ensure they meet predefined quality and performance criteria before full-scale production.
  • Prepare and present detailed quality reports and data summaries for management, highlighting key performance indicators (KPIs), trends, and the status of ongoing quality initiatives.
  • Utilize Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and/or Vision Systems to perform complex dimensional inspections on geometrically intricate parts and generate detailed inspection reports.
  • Support the implementation of Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPAs) by verifying the effectiveness of implemented solutions to ensure they have resolved the root cause of the issue permanently.
  • Act as the primary point of contact on the production floor for all quality-related matters, providing real-time support and decisive action to minimize production delays and material waste.
  • Review and approve final product documentation packages, including certificates of conformance (CoC) and inspection data, prior to shipment to the customer.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement projects and Lean Manufacturing initiatives (e.g., Kaizen events, 5S).
  • Assist in maintaining the calibration database and coordinating with external calibration service providers.
  • Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) meetings to discuss and determine the disposition of non-conforming products.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of training materials for quality-related topics across the organization.
