Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, lead, and manage comprehensive quality improvement projects using PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) cycles, Lean, and Six Sigma tools to reduce variation, enhance patient safety, and improve clinical and operational outcomes.
  • Develop, maintain, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality metrics (e.g., readmission rates, infection rates, patient safety indicators, throughput metrics), ensuring timely dissemination to leadership and frontline teams.
  • Perform advanced data analysis using statistical methods to identify performance gaps, trends, and root causes; translate quantitative findings into actionable improvement plans.
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary root cause analyses (RCA) and failure mode and effects analyses (FMEA) following safety events, near misses, or performance deficiencies and ensure implementation and tracking of corrective actions.
  • Create, implement, and maintain standard work, clinical pathways, and process maps to standardize care delivery and reduce process variability across units or service lines.
  • Partner with clinical leaders, operations, IT, and finance to align improvement efforts with organizational priorities, secure funding or resource allocation, and remove barriers to implementation.
  • Design and deliver training, coaching, and education for staff on QI methodologies, data literacy, PDSA cycles, and new processes to ensure sustainable adoption and competency building.
  • Lead or support performance improvement committees, safety huddles, morbidity and mortality reviews, and other governance forums; prepare agendas, materials, and follow-up action plans.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and visualizations (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Excel) that provide real-time or near-real-time insight into performance and enable rapid-cycle improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (Joint Commission, CMS, state regulations) by preparing for surveys, audits, and accreditation reviews and by translating regulatory requirements into local policies and workflows.
  • Draft, review, and update policies, procedures, protocols, and clinical guidelines to reflect best practices and evidence-based care, and coordinate dissemination and staff acknowledgment.
  • Conduct time-motion studies, workflow analyses, and capacity planning to optimize utilization of resources, reduce bottlenecks, and improve patient flow and access.
  • Manage and track improvement project portfolios, including timelines, milestones, outcomes, and ROI; present results and lessons learned to executive leadership and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with IT and informatics teams to define data requirements, validate data sources (EHR), and ensure integrity of measurement for quality metrics and reporting.
  • Drive patient- and family-centered improvement initiatives, including patient experience surveys, complaint analyses, and co-design activities that integrate patient feedback into process redesign.
  • Monitor vendor or contracted service performance as it relates to quality and safety; develop corrective plans and hold partners accountable to service-level agreements.
  • Prepare detailed written reports, grant proposals, or improvement charters that document methodology, results, sustainability plans, and spread strategies for successful interventions.
  • Evaluate cost implications of quality initiatives and calculate cost-savings, resource utilization effects, or revenue impact resulting from sustained improvements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for infection prevention, medication safety, falls prevention, or other clinical quality domains as assigned; provide guidance on evidence-based prevention strategies.
  • Mentor and coach clinical and operational staff to build local quality capability, including training new QI team members and supporting career development for continuous improvement roles.
  • Coordinate cross-departmental communication and change management activities, including stakeholder mapping, communication plans, and resistance mitigation to ensure adoption of new processes and technology.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation of QI activities, data sources, audit trails, and outcomes to support transparency, reproducibility, and regulatory readiness.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with preparation and coordination for accreditation surveys, regulatory inspections, and internal audits, including compiling documentation and facilitating mock surveys.
  • Participate in organizational quality strategy and roadmap planning to align unit-level initiatives with enterprise goals and quality priorities.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests, exploratory analyses, and data validation tasks to answer operational or clinical questions from leaders and committees.
  • Collaborate with research teams to support quality-related research or pilot programs, including study design support and operational facilitation.
  • Contribute to vendor selection and implementation efforts when new tools (EHR modules, analytics platforms, registration systems) impact quality workflows.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Business, Industrial Engineering, or related field. For clinical roles, active RN or other relevant clinical licensure may be required.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's degree (MSN, MPH, MHA, MBA, or equivalent) or advanced certification in Quality or Patient Safety.
  • Certifications such as CPHQ (Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality), Lean Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, or Project Management (PMP) are strongly preferred.
