Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and coordinate the daily activities of the quarry crew, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing operations, to achieve production goals.
  • Champion and enforce all MSHA, OSHA, and company-specific safety policies and regulations, fostering a "safety-first" culture across the entire site.
  • Conduct daily pre-shift safety meetings (toolbox talks) to communicate potential hazards, daily work plans, and safety focus areas.
  • Perform regular workplace examinations and site inspections of the pit, highwalls, haul roads, and processing plant to identify and mitigate hazards.
  • Manage and adjust daily and weekly production schedules to align with sales demand, plant capacity, and inventory targets.
  • Continuously monitor the performance and condition of all fixed and mobile equipment, coordinating with the maintenance department to schedule preventative maintenance and address breakdowns promptly.
  • Oversee and ensure the consistent quality of all extracted and processed materials, making sure they meet internal and customer specifications.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop quarry personnel, providing on-the-job training, coaching, and performance feedback to build a skilled and motivated team.
  • Act as the first point of contact for resolving operational issues, equipment malfunctions, and personnel conflicts in a timely and effective manner.
  • Maintain precise and thorough records for production volume, employee hours, safety incidents, and equipment downtime.
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of third-party contractors, including blasting crews and specialized maintenance vendors, ensuring they adhere to site standards.
  • Implement and optimize mine plans, working to maximize resource recovery while ensuring pit stability and operational efficiency.
  • Lead incident investigations for any accidents or near-misses, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Manage stockpile inventory levels, directing the placement and reclamation of materials to prevent segregation and ensure accurate accounting.
  • Optimize the deployment and use of heavy mobile equipment to maximize productivity, reduce fuel consumption, and minimize operational costs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the Quarry Manager in the development of the annual operating budget, providing input on labor, equipment, and supply costs.
  • Contribute to the creation of short-term and long-range mine planning by providing practical, on-the-ground insights.
  • Generate and present daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports to senior management, highlighting key performance indicators, challenges, and successes.
  • Collaborate with the environmental department to ensure all activities comply with permits, including dust suppression, water management, and reclamation efforts.
  • Evaluate and recommend new equipment, technologies, or operational methods that could enhance safety, improve efficiency, or reduce costs.
  • Participate actively in the hiring, interviewing, and onboarding process for new members of the quarry team.
  • Manage employee work schedules, approve timecards, and handle requests for time off to ensure continuous and adequate operational coverage.
  • Support the sales and logistics teams by providing up-to-date information on product availability and production capabilities.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep understanding of MSHA/OSHA safety regulations and compliance reporting requirements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of surface mining/quarrying methods, including drilling patterns, blasting principles, loading techniques, and haul road design.
  • Proven experience with the operation and capabilities of heavy mobile equipment such as wheel loaders, haul trucks, excavators, and dozers.
  • Ability to read and interpret mine plans, geological maps, and survey data to guide daily operations.
  • Strong familiarity with aggregate and construction material specifications and the associated quality control testing procedures.
  • Competency in production planning, inventory management systems, and basic cost analysis.
  • Working knowledge of preventative maintenance principles for heavy machinery and fixed plant equipment.
  • Proficient with basic computer software, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) for reporting, and experience with site-specific production software is a plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-5+ years of progressive experience in a mining, quarry, or heavy civil construction environment. At least 1-2 years in a lead operator, foreman, or direct supervisory capacity is essential.

Preferred:

  • Direct experience in a crushed stone, sand, or gravel operation is highly advantageous. Current MSHA Part 46/48 training and certifications are strongly preferred. Experience with blasting and explosives handling certifications is a significant asset.
