Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare and execute laboratory-scale experiments, batches, and trials with precision, following established protocols and experimental designs provided by the R&D team.
  • Perform a wide variety of standard and complex chemical and physical tests on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to ensure they meet quality and performance specifications.
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain a range of standard and advanced laboratory equipment, such as viscometers, pH meters, spectrophotometers, HPLC, GC-MS, and particle size analyzers.
  • Accurately and contemporaneously document all experimental procedures, raw data, observations, and results in a laboratory notebook (physical or electronic) with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Analyze and interpret test data, identifying trends, deviations, and out-of-spec results, and preparing clear, concise summary reports for review by senior scientists.
  • Conduct comprehensive stability testing on new and existing product formulations under various environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light) to assess shelf life and performance over time.
  • Assist in the development, validation, and implementation of new analytical test methods to support product innovation and enhance quality control capabilities.
  • Manage and maintain an organized inventory of laboratory chemicals, reagents, and supplies, including tracking usage, processing orders, and ensuring proper storage and handling.
  • Uphold and champion stringent laboratory safety standards, including the correct handling of hazardous chemicals, consistent use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliant waste disposal.
  • Collaborate directly with R&D scientists and engineers to troubleshoot unexpected experimental outcomes and contribute practical insights during project brainstorming sessions.
  • Support the scale-up process from laboratory benchtop to pilot plant and full-scale production by preparing materials, collecting critical data, and providing hands-on assistance.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and highly efficient laboratory workspace, adhering to 5S principles and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and perform exploratory analysis to assist with ongoing research projects.
  • Prepare and professionally package product samples for shipment to customers, co-packers, or for third-party testing, ensuring all labeling and documentation is accurate.
  • Participate in sensory evaluations of products, acting as a panelist or assisting in the facilitation of panel testing as required by the project.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of laboratory processes by suggesting updates to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and workflows to enhance efficiency and safety.
  • Assist in the creation, revision, and maintenance of technical documents, including product specifications, certificates of analysis (COAs), and test method procedures.
  • Provide technical support and hands-on training to new technicians or interns on laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and equipment operation.
  • Research and evaluate new laboratory instrumentation or technologies that could benefit the R&D department's capabilities and present findings to the team.
  • Participate actively in cross-functional project teams, representing the lab's capabilities and providing data-driven insights to support broader business goals.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Analytical Testing: Proficiency in wet chemistry techniques (e.g., titration, gravimetric analysis) and physical property testing (e.g., viscosity, density, pH, moisture analysis).
  • Laboratory Instrumentation: Hands-on experience operating and calibrating scientific instruments such as HPLC, GC, FTIR, UV-Vis Spectrophotometers, and rheometers.
  • Formulation & Compounding: Ability to accurately weigh and mix chemicals and raw materials to create experimental batches and formulations.
  • Data Integrity & Management: Strong skills in meticulous record-keeping, data entry, and experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) or electronic lab notebooks (ELN).
  • SOP Adherence & Development: A deep understanding of the importance of following Standard Operating Procedures and the ability to contribute to writing or revising them.
  • Chemical Handling & Safety: Comprehensive knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), chemical safety protocols, SDS interpretation, and proper waste disposal.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and charting, as well as Word and PowerPoint for report generation.
  • Statistical Analysis: Basic understanding of statistical concepts (mean, standard deviation, trends) and familiarity with software like JMP or Minitab is a strong plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

An Associate of Science (A.S.) degree is typically the minimum requirement, often coupled with relevant lab experience.

Preferred Education:

A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree is highly preferred and often required for roles with greater complexity and advancement potential.
