Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and meticulously oversee all daily railroad operations within the assigned territory, including train departures, arrivals, yard switching, and industrial servicing to ensure fluid and efficient network velocity.
  • Champion and enforce a world-class safety culture, ensuring unwavering compliance with all Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), and internal safety protocols to achieve a zero-incident work environment.
  • Develop, implement, and refine comprehensive operational plans to optimize the utilization of critical assets, including locomotives, railcars, crews, and track infrastructure, to maximize productivity and service reliability.
  • Assume full accountability for the territory's financial performance, including developing and managing the operating budget, analyzing P&L statements, and executing strategic cost-control initiatives to drive profitability.
  • Lead, mentor, and cultivate a high-performing team of subordinate managers, train crews, and craft employees, overseeing hiring, training, performance evaluations, and career development programs.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for labor relations, expertly administering collective bargaining agreements, managing grievances, and conducting disciplinary investigations in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into service interruptions, safety incidents, accidents, and injuries, performing detailed root cause analysis and implementing robust corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Collaborate closely with sales, marketing, and customer service teams to understand customer needs and ensure service plans are designed and executed to meet or exceed their expectations.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time performance, asset dwell time, crew productivity, and operational costs, using data to inform strategic decisions.
  • Proactively manage and mitigate operational risks, including those related to hazardous materials transportation, extreme weather events, and infrastructure integrity.
  • Lead service recovery efforts during network disruptions, making critical real-time decisions to restore operations safely and efficiently while minimizing impact on customers.
  • Drive continuous improvement projects using methodologies like Lean or Six Sigma to identify and eliminate waste, streamline processes, and enhance overall operational efficiency.
  • Maintain and inspect the physical characteristics of the territory, coordinating with engineering and mechanical departments to ensure tracks, signals, and equipment are in optimal condition.
  • Engage with local community leaders, public officials, and emergency response agencies to build positive relationships and coordinate on issues of mutual interest.
  • Ensure all employees receive mandatory and recurrent training on operating rules, safety procedures, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Oversee crew scheduling and management to ensure compliance with Hours of Service (HOS) laws and optimize crew availability and efficiency.
  • Develop and execute contingency plans for various scenarios, including derailments, power outages, and major service disruptions, to ensure business continuity.
  • Foster a culture of accountability and ownership among all team members, empowering them to take initiative in improving safety and service.
  • Interface with connecting railroads and other transportation partners to ensure seamless interchange of traffic and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Prepare and present detailed operational performance reviews and strategic plans to senior leadership, clearly articulating successes, challenges, and future initiatives.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
