Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, produce, and meticulously refine short-term and long-term operational train timetables to maximize network capacity and on-time performance.
  • Conduct detailed network capacity analysis to identify potential bottlenecks and inform strategic infrastructure investment decisions.

  • Model and simulate the effects of proposed timetable changes, new services, or infrastructure alterations on the overall network performance.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the planning department and operational control centers, providing clarity on planned movements and resolving scheduling conflicts.
  • Ensure all train plans and schedules strictly adhere to national and local safety regulations, operating rules, and industry standards.
  • Prepare and present detailed performance reports and post-event analyses to senior management, highlighting key performance indicators, trends, and areas for improvement.
  • Manage the planning inputs for special events, seasonal demand shifts, and holiday services, ensuring seamless execution.
  • Evaluate the operational and financial feasibility of new commercial service proposals from passenger or freight business units.
  • Create and maintain detailed diagrams and rosters for locomotive and crew assignments, ensuring efficient turnaround and coverage.
  • Utilize and master specialized railway planning software and simulation tools (e.g., RailSys, OpenTrack, RTC) for creating and validating plans.
  • Conduct route-cause analysis on recurring delays and operational issues to develop and recommend long-term mitigation strategies.
  • Participate in cross-functional project teams dedicated to improving network efficiency, implementing new technology, or launching new rail services.
  • Review and challenge existing planning processes and assumptions, continuously seeking opportunities for innovation and improvement in timetabling methodology.
  • Coordinate with connecting rail operators and transportation authorities to ensure smooth interchange of traffic and integrated scheduling.
  • Support the commercial team by providing accurate operational data and feasibility studies for tenders and customer contracts.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Advanced Timetabling & Scheduling: Deep, practical knowledge of train planning principles, including headway, pathing, and conflict resolution.
  • Rail Planning Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with industry-standard scheduling and simulation software (e.g., RailSys, OpenTrack, GIRO HASTUS, or proprietary systems).
  • Data Analysis & Interpretation: Ability to analyze large datasets related to performance, demand, and operations. Proficiency in Excel is essential; SQL, Python, or R is a significant plus.
  • Network & Capacity Modeling: Expertise in modeling railway networks to assess capacity, identify constraints, and test scenarios.
