Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Load and unload passenger baggage, prioritized cargo, and auxiliary equipment using belt loaders, container loaders, dollies, and hand-loading techniques while maintaining correct piece counts and weight distribution to support aircraft weight and balance.
- Safely marshal and guide aircraft to and from parking stands using standardized hand signals, light wands, and radio communications to ensure precise positioning and departure clearance.
- Perform pushback and tow operations using tow tractors and tugs, including coupling/uncoupling aircraft, coordinating with flight crew and ground control, and following all safety protocols during maneuvering.
- Operate and maintain ground support equipment (belts, tugs, GPU, air-start carts, de-icing rigs, high-loaders) in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and company preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
- Inspect baggage and cargo for damage, report irregularities, tag and document mishandled or delayed items, and follow chain-of-custody procedures for lost, misdirected, or damaged goods.
- Process and handle priority and special-service items (VIP baggage, medical equipment, unaccompanied minors, live animals, perishable cargo, temperature-controlled shipments) with required documentation and care standards.
- Handle, identify, and process hazardous materials (IATA/DOT regulated items) according to Dangerous Goods regulations, completing all required paperwork and segregating incompatible substances.
- Complete accurate load sheets, cargo manifests, and reconciliation forms, ensuring proper weight reporting, distribution, and compliance with aircraft weight and balance requirements.
- Respond to irregular operations (IROPS), delayed flights, and last-minute load changes by reprioritizing tasks, communicating with operations control, and executing rapid, safe reconfiguration of baggage and cargo loads.
- Perform routine safety checks of ramp areas (FOD walks), secure loose items, and immediately remove foreign object debris from aprons to prevent aircraft damage and maintain regulatory compliance.
- Communicate clearly and continuously with pilots, flight attendants, dispatchers, ground control, and other ramp personnel via VHF/UHF radios and company communication tools to coordinate movements and resolve issues.
- Apply airline and airport security procedures, assist with passenger baggage screening protocols when required, and maintain a valid airport security badge and access control compliance.
- Load and position unit load devices (ULDs), cargo pallets, and containers, ensuring they are properly secured, restrained, and palletized according to airline load control and safety guidelines.
- Perform aircraft servicing duties including lavatory servicing, potable water service, and cabin trash removal or coordination with services teams to prepare the aircraft between flights.
- Support winter operations including pre-flight and post-flight de-icing coordination, operating or assisting de-icing crews, and following de-icing fluid documentation and environmental procedures.
- Execute ramp safety briefings and follow lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance or when equipment is immobilized, ensuring personal protective equipment (PPE) use at all times.
- Maintain accurate incident and non-conformance reports for safety events, equipment failures, or cargo mishandling and participate in root-cause analysis and corrective action follow-up.
- Assist with on-the-job training for new hires and temporary staff by demonstrating standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and equipment operation best practices.
- Provide courteous, professional customer-facing support at times (gate or baggage claim) to resolve passenger inquiries related to baggage status, special handling requests, or connections.
- Adhere to and champion company safety initiatives, participate in toolbox talks and safety meetings, and proactively suggest improvements to reduce incidents and improve ramp efficiency.
- Ensure proper fueling coordination by maintaining communication with fueling teams and complying with hot-refuel or fuel service safety rules when applicable.
- Follow all regulatory, airline, and airport operating procedures including FAA, TSA, IATA, and local airport authority rules to maintain legal and operational compliance across ramp operations.
- Execute emergency response procedures when required, including aircraft fire response protocols, evacuation coordination, and immediate reporting to emergency services and line management.
Secondary Functions
- Assist ground operations teams with inventory control for spare parts, ground equipment supplies, and ramp consumables; reorder and track usage as directed.
- Support supervisor-led investigations into ramp incidents by gathering witness statements, reviewing CCTV (if available), and compiling timelines.
