- Monitor herd health, identify signs of illness or injury, perform basic treatments, and coordinate with veterinarians to schedule vaccinations, deworming, and medical interventions.
- Plan and implement pasture rotation and grazing strategies to maximize forage utilization, promote pasture recovery, and reduce parasite loads while supporting sustainable land stewardship.
- Manage breeding programs, including heat detection, artificial insemination support, calving or lambing assistance, record breeding cycles, and implement genetic selection protocols to improve herd performance.
- Prepare and administer rations and feed programs, calculate nutritional needs, manage feed inventories, and optimize feed efficiency to control costs and improve animal performance.
- Operate, maintain, and perform preventative maintenance on tractors, loaders, ATVs, feed mixers, and other agricultural equipment; troubleshoot mechanical issues and coordinate repairs with mechanics as needed.
- Maintain fences, gates, corrals, and water systems (pumps, troughs, stock tanks) to ensure secure, reliable containment and access to water across pastures and pens.
- Assist with birthing, neonatal care, and postpartum monitoring, providing immediate care for newborn livestock and escalating issues to veterinary staff when necessary.
- Implement and maintain biosecurity and disease prevention protocols across the ranch to limit pathogen spread between animals and incoming livestock.
- Manage manure handling, composting, and nutrient application to fields in accordance with environmental regulations and sustainable nutrient management practices.
- Supervise seasonal staff, ranch hands, and contractors: assign daily tasks, train on safe animal handling and equipment operation, conduct performance checks, and maintain a positive safety culture.
- Maintain detailed records of herd inventories, medical treatments, breeding histories, feed and supply usage, and production metrics, using paper logs or farm management software.
- Coordinate and schedule routine tasks and seasonal activities (weaning, branding, vaccination campaigns, haying, calving/lambing seasons, and market deliveries) to meet production timelines.
- Load and transport livestock to markets, processing facilities, or other farms, ensuring compliance with transport regulations, humane handling standards, and proper documentation.
- Implement pasture improvements and soil conservation measures including seeding, fertilization, erosion control, and irrigation adjustments to increase productivity and long-term viability.
- Inspect facilities and implement safety improvements to reduce risk of injury to staff and animals; enforce PPE use and safe equipment operation standards.
- Manage on-farm inputs and supplies—seed, fertilizer, vaccines, veterinary supplies, fencing materials—maintaining inventory levels, sourcing competitive vendors, and monitoring costs.
- Participate in budgeting and expense tracking for the ranch: provide input on capital needs, evaluate ROI for equipment purchases, and support operational cost control.
- Monitor and comply with federal, state, and local agricultural regulations, animal welfare laws, and environmental permits; prepare for and participate in inspections when required.
- Support marketing and sales efforts for livestock and by-products: prepare animals for market, document weights and quality metrics, and coordinate with buyers, auctions, and processors.
- Implement rotational cropping or cover crop programs where applicable to supplement grazing, improve soil health, and integrate livestock and crop operations for diversified income.
- Respond to emergencies including sick or injured animals, extreme weather events, fence breaks, and water system failures—prioritizing safety and minimizing animal loss.
Secondary Functions
- Maintain and organize ranch documentation and digital records for traceability, compliance, and informed decision-making.
- Track and analyze production data (weight gains, feed conversion, reproduction rates) to recommend management improvements and support performance targets.
- Participate in professional development and training on animal health, pasture management, regenerative agriculture, and equipment operation to keep practices current.
- Coordinate with extension agents, agronomists, and veterinarians to implement new practices, troubleshoot herd or pasture problems, and adopt recommended innovations.
- Assist with capital projects such as corral upgrades, water development, new fencing installs, or equipment procurement by providing on-site management and contractor oversight.
- Serve as a point of contact for neighbors, suppliers, and regulatory inspectors; foster positive community and industry relationships.
- Help design and implement sustainability initiatives including rotational grazing, reduced chemical inputs, and wildlife habitat improvements that align with conservation goals.
- Support small-scale crop production efforts (hay, silage, or forage crops) to ensure adequate winter feed supplies and diversify revenue streams.
- Contribute to emergency preparedness planning and mock drills for fire, flood, or disease outbreaks to improve ranch resilience.
