Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Monitor and analyze the daily performance of assigned process units, including yields, product quality, catalyst performance, and energy consumption, to ensure operations meet production plans and quality specifications.
  • Develop and implement sophisticated process optimization strategies to enhance unit throughput, improve energy efficiency, and maximize the overall profitability of the refinery.
  • Act as the primary technical resource for troubleshooting complex operational upsets, conducting thorough root cause analysis (RCA), and providing effective, timely engineering solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Lead or actively participate in critical Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs), such as HAZOP studies, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and What-If scenarios, to identify, evaluate, and mitigate process safety risks.
  • Manage a portfolio of small to medium-sized capital and expense projects from initial concept and justification through to detailed design, commissioning, and post-startup support.
  • Develop, review, and maintain essential process engineering documentation, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and safe operating limits.
  • Conduct detailed performance testing and health monitoring of critical process equipment such as distillation columns, reactors, heat exchangers, furnaces, and pumps to ensure reliability and efficiency.
  • Design and execute plant test runs to evaluate new catalysts, process chemicals, or innovative operating procedures aimed at driving continuous improvement and competitive advantage.
  • Provide essential engineering support during major plant turnarounds (shutdowns), including defining the work scope, planning inspections, and leading post-turnaround startup activities.
  • Build, validate, and maintain advanced process simulation models using tools like Aspen HYSYS or Pro/II to predict unit behavior, evaluate debottlenecking opportunities, and test optimization scenarios.
  • Serve as a key technical advisor to the Operations team, providing clear guidance on process control strategies, alarm management, and handling deviations from normal operation.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations by monitoring emissions, managing waste streams, and preparing necessary regulatory and compliance reports.
  • Author, review, and champion Management of Change (MOC) requests, ensuring that any modifications to process, equipment, or procedures are rigorously evaluated for safety, environmental, and operational impact.
  • Develop and update comprehensive operating procedures and training materials for console operators and field personnel to ensure consistent, safe, and efficient plant operation.
  • Perform detailed heat and material balance calculations to accurately track unit performance, identify losses, and pinpoint opportunities for efficiency gains.
  • Collaborate closely with the maintenance and reliability departments to diagnose equipment issues, improve asset uptime, and develop long-term equipment strategies.
  • Participate in or lead incident investigations, leveraging your technical expertise to determine causal factors and recommend robust corrective and preventive actions.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and process improvements from across the industry, developing economic justifications and proposals for their implementation at the facility.
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers, interns, and co-op students, providing them with technical guidance and supporting their professional growth and development within the organization.
  • Prepare and deliver clear, concise technical reports, project justifications, and performance updates in presentations to various levels of management.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Process Simulation: Expertise in using software such as Aspen HYSYS, Pro/II, or SimSci for modeling and optimizing refinery units.
  • Process Safety Management: In-depth knowledge of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA/HAZOP), Management of Change (MOC), and incident investigation protocols.
  • Refinery Unit Operations: Strong technical understanding of core refinery processes (e.g., Crude Distillation, FCC, Hydrotreating, Reforming, Alkylation).
  • Engineering Fundamentals: Mastery of heat and material balances, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and reaction kinetics.
    -P&ID and PFD Development: Ability to read, interpret, and create detailed process diagrams.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.

  • Master of Science (M.S.) in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is a significant plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3 to 10+ years of direct engineering experience within a petroleum refinery, petrochemical plant, or closely related heavy industrial processing environment.
