Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose and repair complex refrigeration systems by systematically troubleshooting compressors, condensers, evaporators, expansion devices, and charge levels to restore performance to OEM specifications and manufacturer tolerances.
  • Perform complete system inspections and testing, including pressure and vacuum testing, leak detection (electronic and dye), and oil analysis, and document findings in service reports and work orders.
  • Recover, evacuate, and reclaim refrigerants using certified recovery equipment in accordance with EPA 608 regulations and company environmental policies, including record-keeping for refrigerant transactions.
  • Replace and rebuild compressors, valves, motors, fans, and other major refrigeration components; perform mechanical and electrical repairs such as motor replacement, bearing changes, shaft alignments, and belt/pulley adjustments.
  • Execute brazing and soldering operations on copper and steel refrigeration piping, including proper brazing techniques, flux application, purge procedures, and post-braze pressure testing.
  • Charge and balance systems with the correct refrigerant type and quantity (R-134a, R-404A, R-407C, R-410A, R-448A, R-452A, R-744/CO2, etc.), perform superheat and subcooling calculations, and calibrate charging to achieve energy-efficient operation.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electronic controls, thermostats, defrost controllers, timed defrost systems, solenoid valves, and sensors; interface with building automation systems (BAS) and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) as required.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on walk-in coolers/freezers, condensing units, air-cooled and water-cooled systems, evaporator coil cleanings, filter replacements, and door gasket inspections to reduce emergency failures and extend equipment life.
  • Conduct startup and commissioning activities for new refrigeration installations, including system flushing, oil charging, refrigeration circuit evacuation, leak testing, and performance validation against design specifications.
  • Diagnose and remediate refrigeration icing and defrost issues, ensuring correct defrost cycles, heater function, and drain/meltwater management to protect product integrity and safety.
  • Inspect and test electrical circuits, perform multi-meter diagnostics, replace contactors, relays, capacitors, starters, and fuses, and verify correct motor protection and electrical grounding.
  • Perform emergency field service response for critical breakdowns, prioritize safety and product protection for perishable goods, coordinate rapid parts sourcing and temporary cooling solutions (portable units, emergency towers).
  • Maintain accurate, professional service documentation: digital work orders, parts used, time logs, safety checklists, and customer-facing service summaries with recommended next steps and cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with sales and account managers to provide technical input on retrofit proposals, energy-efficiency upgrades, equipment replacement recommendations, and scope of work estimates.
  • Maintain and manage stock of commonly used parts, refrigeration oils, refrigerant cylinders, and service tools in the service vehicle; log inventory consumption and requisition specialty parts proactively.
  • Test and verify system energy performance, measure amperage draw, voltages, and system loading, and recommend optimization opportunities such as condenser cleaning, fan controls, or variable-speed upgrades.
  • Adhere to all workplace safety standards (OSHA, company policies), use proper lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, wear PPE, and perform job hazard analyses prior to each service task.
  • Apply knowledge of food safety and sanitation requirements when working in grocery, food processing, and restaurant environments to prevent contamination and uphold health codes.
  • Coach and mentor junior technicians and apprentices during on-the-job training, providing technical guidance on diagnostics, safety, and best practices for field service work.
  • Perform warranty and quality assurance follow-ups to ensure repairs meet customer expectations, resolve recurring faults, and close the feedback loop with manufacturing or project teams.
  • Use mobile service management tools and diagnostic apps to capture photos, log data trends, upload service reports, and schedule follow-up preventive maintenance visits.
  • Conduct targeted energy audits and refrigeration system assessments, identifying opportunities for heat reclaim, variable-speed drives, improved defrost strategies, and better control sequences to lower operational costs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with job quoting, parts list preparation, and time estimates to support service dispatch and sales proposals.
  • Participate in on-call rotation and emergency response scheduling to ensure 24/7 coverage for critical refrigeration failures.

  • Help maintain departmental compliance documents, refrigerant purchase logs, EPA records, and equipment calibration certificates.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
