Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex refrigeration and HVACR system failures on commercial equipment including scroll and reciprocating compressors, condensers, evaporators, oil separators, and electronic expansion valves using multimeters, manifold gauges, and electronic leak detectors.
  • Perform full-service refrigeration repairs on walk-in coolers, freezers, display cases, reach-in units, ice machines and refrigerated transport units, replacing compressors, condenser coils, evaporator assemblies, and fan motors as required.
  • Execute safe refrigerant recovery, recycling and charging procedures in accordance with EPA 608 regulations and company refrigerant handling policies; document refrigerant usage and disposal on service tickets.
  • Read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control logic and P&IDs to isolate faults in controls, PLCs, thermostats and building automation integration points.
  • Conduct brazing, soldering and piping repairs on copper and steel refrigeration lines using oxy-acetylene and nitrous/propane systems while maintaining leak-free joints and adhering to industry safety standards.
  • Perform vacuuming, dehydration and pressure testing on evacuated refrigeration systems using micron gauges, vacuum pumps and dry nitrogen to validate system integrity before charging.
  • Use electronic leak detection (ultrasonic, halide, and UV dye) to locate and repair system leaks; install or replace schrader valves, service ports and leak seals when needed.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and program commercial refrigeration controls, thermostats, defrost controllers, and time clocks; perform firmware updates or replace control modules as needed.
  • Replace and test refrigeration components — capacitors, contactors, relays, pressure switches, thermostats, solenoid valves and defrost heaters — ensuring systems operate within manufacturer specifications.
  • Perform start-up and commissioning of new refrigeration and condenser units: assist with installation, verify superheat/subcooling, check oil levels, confirm refrigerant charge, and calibrate controls for optimal performance.
  • Conduct planned preventive maintenance (PM) inspections and service visits including coil cleaning, belt replacement, condenser and evaporator cleaning, airflow checks and lubrication; document findings and recommend lifecycle repairs.
  • Provide emergency on-call service and rapid troubleshooting to minimize product loss and downtime in grocery, convenience, or food-service environments, coordinating with store management and loss prevention.
  • Maintain accurate electronic service reports in CMMS or mobile work-order systems (e.g., ServiceTitan, Oracle NetSuite, UpKeep), logging parts used, time, labor codes, and customer sign-off.
  • Coordinate parts procurement and manage a stocked technician van: order replacement components, track serial numbers, and ensure critical spares are available for rapid response calls.
  • Advise customers on energy-saving opportunities and system upgrades (e.g., LED case lighting, ECM fan motors, variable-speed compressors, HCFC/HFO conversions) to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Perform basic HVAC electrical work — wire motor leads, install disconnects and safety devices, verify grounding and circuit protection — in compliance with local electrical codes and company safety standards.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians and apprentices on diagnostic best practices, safe brazing techniques, refrigerant handling, and documentation expectations to build team skill depth.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety procedures, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout (LOTO) protocols, and confined space guidelines when working in walk-in coolers, rooftop units or tight mechanical rooms.
  • Participate in root cause analysis on repeat failures, prepare corrective action reports, and implement preventive modifications to reduce recurrence and warranty costs.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and facility managers: explain repairs, provide repair estimates, obtain approvals, and follow up to confirm system performance after service.
  • Support warranty and manufacturer claim processes by documenting failures, submitting photos and serial numbers, and coordinating remanufactured parts or replacements with suppliers.
  • Perform refrigeration system retrofits and conversions (e.g., R-22 to R-404A/R-448A/R-452A, HFO blends or CO2 cascade integration) following manufacturer and regulatory guidance.
  • Conduct seasonal preparations and shutdown/startup procedures for freezer and cooler assets, safeguarding inventory and aligning with store or facility operational schedules.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts: suggest process improvements, update standard operating procedures, and contribute to safety and technical training programs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist operations and account managers with preventive maintenance scheduling, long-term asset planning and capital repair recommendations.
  • Support inventory control by verifying returned parts, identifying obsolete stock, and recommending parts rationalization for fleet vans and central warehouses.
  • Help maintain compliance records for refrigerant reporting, safety training logs, and service contract deliverables.
  • Provide input to service pricing, job time estimates and parts quoting based on field experience and historical job data.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Refrigeration system diagnostics and repair (commercial and industrial refrigeration systems, walk-ins, display cases, condensing units).
  • EPA Section 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification and verified refrigerant recovery, recycling and charging techniques.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with proven hands-on refrigeration/HVACR experience and EPA 608 certification.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational certificate, technical diploma, or Associate Degree in Refrigeration Technology, HVACR, Mechanical Technology or related field.
