- Communicate proactively with customers on-site and remotely: explain faults, recommend repairs or replacement options, provide cost estimates, and advise on energy-saving and food safety best practices.
- Perform mechanical belt, pulley, and condenser fan alignment and replacement; adjust defrost controls and heaters on refrigerated display cases and walk-in units to prevent ice build-up and maintain temperature stability.
- Inspect and service related building systems that affect refrigeration performance, including condensate drains, water-cooled condensers, chillers interfacing, and rooftop unit interactions to ensure system integration and efficiency.
- Manage parts inventory in field vehicle: select appropriate OEM or aftermarket parts for repairs, restock common parts, and report required special-order components to the parts procurement team.
- Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, confined space entry protocols, and follow all site-specific safety plans; maintain PPE, fire extinguisher knowledge, and proper handling of refrigerants to prevent environmental and personnel hazards.
- Train junior technicians and apprentices in safe refrigeration repair practices, diagnostics methodology, and customer service expectations while promoting consistent service quality across the team.
- Monitor system performance trends and recommend scheduled upgrades or retrofits (e.g., controls upgrades, refrigerant conversions, energy-efficient condenser or compressor replacements) to improve reliability and reduce operating costs.
- Diagnose and repair refrigeration systems using electronic sensors, IoT-enabled monitoring devices, and remote diagnostics tools where available; provide insights and remote troubleshooting to minimize truck rolls.
- Coordinate with electricians, plumbers, and HVAC contractors for complex site jobs requiring multi-trade expertise; ensure electrical service, gas lines, and structural supports meet installation requirements.
- Perform refrigeration safety and compliance checks including pressure vessel inspections, relief valve verification, and adherence to local codes and OSHA regulations; document compliance activities for audits.
- Evaluate refrigeration system failures post-repair to confirm root-cause correction and implement follow-up checks to prevent recurrence; provide detailed failure analysis reports when requested.
- Support quality assurance and warranty claim processes by providing clear documentation, photographs, test data, and service narratives for manufacturer claims and internal reviews.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the development of preventive maintenance checklists and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for recurring customer sites.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce mean time to repair (MTTR) and increase first-time-fix rates through parts consolidation and diagnostic training.
- Provide input to fleet tooling and safety equipment purchases based on field experience and recurring failure modes.
- Help schedule and prioritize service calls with dispatch to optimize route efficiency and respond to high-priority customer outages.
- Contribute to customer education materials and on-site training for store personnel on basic unit care, temperature logging, and when to escalate service calls.
- Support seasonal workload planning and coordinate with suppliers for timely parts availability during peak demand.
