Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Implement individualized Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) treatment plans as designed by a supervising BCBA, ensuring fidelity to program protocols and measurable goals for clients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related developmental disabilities.
  • Conduct one-on-one therapy sessions delivering discrete trial training (DTT), natural environment teaching (NET), task analysis, chaining, shaping, prompting, and fading according to clinical protocols.
  • Record detailed session-by-session quantitative data on target behaviors and skill acquisition (e.g., correct responses, prompts used, latency, duration, frequency) using electronic data collection tools or paper logs to ensure reliable progress monitoring.
  • Monitor, document, and report occurrences of challenging or safety-risk behaviors immediately to the supervising BCBA and follow crisis or safety protocols when necessary.
  • Use functional communication training (FCT) and other replacement behavior strategies to teach communicative alternatives and reduce maladaptive behaviors in adherence with the client’s behavior intervention plan.
  • Implement reinforcement systems (token economies, edible and activity reinforcers) consistently and ethically to motivate clients and promote generalized skill use across environments.
  • Conduct ongoing informal assessments (antecedent–behavior–consequence observation) during sessions to provide the BCBA with operational data for hypothesis testing and treatment adjustments.
  • Prepare, organize, and maintain therapy materials, visual supports, social stories, and prompting hierarchies tailored to each client’s individualized goals and sensory needs.
  • Facilitate generalization of learned skills by incorporating naturalistic contexts, community outings, and school or home routines as directed by the BCBA.
  • Support communication goals using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, picture exchange communication systems (PECS), or sign language when included in the treatment plan.
  • Provide consistent implementation of toilet training, feeding programs, self-care routines, and daily living skill instruction as part of comprehensive ABA services.
  • Collaborate with caregivers and school staff to train and coach family members and teachers on plan implementation, data collection, and behavior management strategies to support carryover across settings.
  • Attend and actively contribute to team meetings, supervision sessions, and case reviews with BCBAs, therapists, and allied professionals to align on treatment priorities and progress.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of session notes, progress summaries, incident reports, and time logs for billing and clinical oversight purposes.
  • Assist in baseline assessments and program scaling by collecting structured probe data and mastery checks as requested by the BCBA to inform program modifications.
  • Model and reinforce safety skills, including crisis prevention and intervention techniques, de-escalation strategies, and safe physical management only when properly trained and authorized.
  • Adapt instructional strategies for diverse learners, accounting for sensory profiles, communication levels, cultural considerations, and comorbid diagnoses.
  • Use clinical judgment to escalate clinical concerns (regression, sudden behavior changes, medical issues) promptly to the supervising clinician and appropriate support teams.
  • Participate in required competency checks, continuing education, and RBT renewal processes to maintain credential compliance and evidence-based practice.
  • Promote positive rapport, empathy, and respect when engaging with clients, families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary partners to foster a collaborative treatment environment.
  • Assist with scheduling coordination and transition planning to ensure seamless session delivery and continuity of care across clinics, home settings, and schools.
