Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive initial assessments of clients' health history, physical condition, and specific concerns to determine appropriate massage therapy treatments.
  • Develop and propose personalized, evidence-based treatment plans that outline goals, session frequency, and recommended modalities to address client needs.
  • Perform a variety of therapeutic massage techniques, including but not limited to Swedish, deep tissue, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and sports massage.
  • Analyze client posture, gait, and range of motion to identify underlying causes of pain and muscular imbalances.
  • Educate clients on the benefits of massage therapy and provide them with self-care guidance, including remedial exercises, stretching routines, and postural awareness techniques.
  • Meticulously maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date client records, including assessment findings, treatment notes (SOAP format), and progress reports.
  • Monitor client progress and responses to treatment, modifying the treatment plan as necessary to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Communicate effectively with clients to understand their comfort levels, pain tolerance, and feedback during sessions, ensuring a safe and positive experience.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals within the clinic, such as chiropractors, physiotherapists, and acupuncturists, to provide integrated and holistic patient care.
  • Obtain informed consent from clients before initiating any treatment, clearly explaining the proposed techniques and their potential effects.
  • Manage appointment schedules effectively to ensure timely service and maximize client accessibility.
  • Adhere strictly to all professional standards, ethical guidelines, and legal requirements set by the governing massage therapy association or college (e.g., CMTO, CMTBC).
  • Handle billing and payment processing for massage services, including direct billing to third-party insurance providers where applicable.
  • Assess and treat a wide range of conditions, such as repetitive strain injuries, chronic pain syndromes, sports injuries, and stress-related tension.
  • Create a tranquil and professional treatment environment, ensuring the room is clean, well-stocked, and prepared for each client.
  • Stay current with new massage therapy techniques, research, and industry trends through ongoing professional development and continuing education.
  • Proactively build and maintain a consistent client base through exceptional service, rebooking, and fostering positive professional relationships.
  • Address client inquiries and concerns with professionalism and empathy, providing clear information about services and treatment options.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in team meetings, case conferences, and professional development workshops to contribute to the clinic's collaborative environment and service quality.
  • Contribute to clinic marketing and promotional efforts, such as participating in community wellness events or creating educational content.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and inventory of linens, oils, and other clinical supplies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep Tissue & Swedish Massage: Proficient in the application of a wide range of foundational and advanced massage techniques.
  • Anatomy & Physiology: Expert knowledge of the human musculoskeletal system, kinesiology, and pathology.
  • Client Assessment: Skilled in performing physical assessments, including postural analysis, range of motion testing, and orthopedic tests.
  • Treatment Planning: Ability to design effective, goal-oriented treatment plans based on comprehensive assessments.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Diploma or advanced diploma from a recognized and accredited Massage Therapy college/institution (minimum 2200-hour program).
  • Current registration and in good standing with the provincial governing body (e.g., College of Massage Therapists of Ontario/BC/etc.).
  • Valid liability and malpractice insurance.

Preferred Education:

  • Additional certifications in specialized modalities such as Active Release Technique (ART), craniosacral therapy, lymphatic drainage, or sports massage.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology, Health Sciences, or a related field.

Typical Experience Range:
