Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide comprehensive perioperative nursing and surgical support by preparing surgical suites, scrubbing patients, placing monitoring equipment, maintaining aseptic technique and assisting the veterinarian throughout soft-tissue and orthopedic procedures.
  • Administer and monitor anesthesia for routine and complex procedures, calculate drug dosages, place and manage endotracheal tubes, interpret monitoring parameters (ECG, SpO2, blood pressure, capnography) and adjust anesthetic protocols under veterinary direction.
  • Triage and deliver emergency and critical care, including initiating CPR, establishing and maintaining IV access, administering emergency drugs, stabilizing trauma and shock patients and communicating critical status updates to veterinarians and clients.
  • Perform venipuncture and arterial blood collection, establish and maintain intravenous catheters, set up and monitor fluid therapy plans, and manage transfusion protocols including cross-matching, administration and monitoring for reactions.
  • Conduct in-clinic diagnostic testing such as in-house hematology (CBC), blood chemistry panels, urinalysis, cytology sampling and interpretation, fecal exams, and prepare and send samples to external reference labs with accurate labeling and documentation.
  • Operate and interpret diagnostic imaging equipment including digital radiography, dental radiography and ultrasound, position patients safely for diagnostic images, process images, and provide annotated preliminary findings to the veterinarian.
  • Perform dental prophylaxis and dentistry procedures, including scaling, polishing, charting oral health, taking dental radiographs, assisting during extractions and educating owners on dental home care.
  • Provide routine and advanced nursing care for hospitalized patients: monitor vitals, perform bandage changes, wound care, administer medications (oral, injectable, topical), perform feeding and catheter care, and document progress in medical records.

  • Mentor and train junior staff, veterinary assistants and students by demonstrating clinical techniques, supervising procedures, providing feedback, and contributing to continuing education programs and in-clinic competency assessments.
  • Coordinate patient flow and scheduling for appointments, surgeries and diagnostics to optimize clinic efficiency, reduce patient wait times and ensure timely triage for urgent and emergent cases.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
