Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Directly assist licensed physical and occupational therapists with patient treatment plans, providing hands-on support during therapeutic activities and exercises.
  • Guide patients through prescribed exercise routines, ensuring proper form and technique while offering encouragement and motivational support.
  • Safely and proficiently transport patients to and from the therapy department, utilizing wheelchairs, stretchers, or ambulation assistance as needed.
  • Monitor patients' responses during and after treatment, vigilantly observing for any signs of fatigue, pain, or adverse reactions and reporting them promptly to the supervising therapist.
  • Apply therapeutic modalities such as hot packs, cold packs, and paraffin dips under the direct guidance and supervision of a licensed therapist.
  • Skillfully assist patients with functional mobility, including transfers (e.g., bed to chair), gait training with assistive devices, and navigating stairs.
  • Maintain constant vigilance over patient safety, proactively identifying and mitigating potential hazards within the therapy environment.
  • Prepare patients and treatment areas for therapy sessions, ensuring all necessary equipment, linens, and supplies are readily available and properly positioned.
  • Provide clear and simple instructions to patients and their families regarding home exercise programs, as delegated by the supervising therapist.
  • Engage with patients and their families in a compassionate, respectful, and professional manner, fostering a positive and healing atmosphere.

Required Skills & Competencies

  • Therapeutic Modality Application: Knowledge of the correct procedures for applying superficial heat and cold modalities as directed.
  • Medical Terminology: A solid understanding of basic anatomical, physiological, and medical terms related to rehabilitation.
  • EMR/EHR Proficiency: Experience or ability to quickly learn how to navigate and document in electronic medical record systems.
  • CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS): Active certification is almost always a mandatory requirement.
