Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist skilled tradespeople, including carpenters, plumbers, and electricians, by preparing materials, fetching tools, and providing hands-on support as needed.
- Perform selective demolition of interior and exterior structures such as walls, flooring, ceilings, and cabinetry, ensuring precision and protection of adjacent finishes.
- Prepare construction sites by cleaning, leveling, and removing debris and hazardous materials to ensure a safe and accessible work environment for the entire team.
- Load, unload, and meticulously transport construction materials, tools, and equipment to and from the worksite, ensuring proper staging for efficient workflow.
- Operate a wide range of hand and power tools, including drills, chop saws, grinders, and demolition hammers, in a safe and proficient manner.
- Perform basic carpentry tasks such as framing, blocking, and the installation of temporary supports under the guidance of a lead carpenter.
- Assist with the installation of drywall, including measuring, cutting, hanging, and preparing surfaces for taping and mudding.
- Prepare surfaces for painting by scraping, sanding, and applying primer, and perform painting and finishing duties as directed.
- Help with the installation of various types of flooring, including laminate, vinyl plank, and tile, which involves subfloor preparation and precise cutting.
- Mix, pour, and spread materials such as concrete, plaster, and grout according to specifications for various applications.
- Erect and dismantle scaffolding, temporary fencing, barricades, and other support structures required for site safety and project execution.
- Maintain a clean and organized job site throughout the day by sweeping, collecting and disposing of waste, and organizing tools and materials.
- Read and interpret basic blueprints, schematics, and instructions from supervisors to understand project scope and daily tasks.
- Perform site protection duties, including laying down floor coverings, installing dust barriers, and protecting existing fixtures from damage during renovation.
- Assist in basic plumbing and electrical work, such as pulling wires or fitting pipes, under the direct supervision of a licensed tradesperson.
- Carry out measurements and calculations to accurately cut and assemble materials according to project requirements.
- Ensure all work is completed in compliance with health and safety regulations, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Dig trenches, backfill holes, and compact earth to prepare for foundations, footings, or underground utilities.
- Assist in the installation of windows, doors, and trim, ensuring proper fit and function.
- Report any job site hazards, incidents, or equipment malfunctions immediately to the site supervisor to maintain a proactive safety culture.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in picking up and delivering materials from various suppliers to different job sites as needed to prevent project delays.
- Maintain a detailed inventory of on-site tools and equipment, reporting any damage, loss, or need for replacement to the supervisor.
- Collaborate with the project team to identify and solve on-site challenges and suggest more efficient ways of completing tasks.
- Participate in daily safety meetings ("toolbox talks") and contribute to maintaining a culture of safety and continuous improvement on site.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Power Tool Proficiency: Safe and effective operation of common construction tools such as circular saws, reciprocating saws, angle grinders, and hammer drills.
- Material Handling: Ability to safely lift, carry, and move heavy materials (upwards of 50 lbs) and equipment around a dynamic job site.
- Basic Carpentry: Foundational knowledge of wood framing, cutting materials to precise measurements, and assembling structures.
- Site Preparation & Cleanup: Expertise in preparing a worksite for tasks and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and organization.
- Demolition Techniques: Skill in performing controlled demolition of various materials while minimizing dust and protecting surrounding structures.
- Measurement & Layout: Ability to accurately read a tape measure, use levels, and make precise marks for cutting and installation.
- Drywall & Finishing: Experience assisting with hanging drywall, as well as basic knowledge of taping, mudding, and sanding processes.
