Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Warmly and graciously greet all incoming and departing guests, making a positive first impression and setting the tone for their dining experience.
  • Manage the reservation system (such as OpenTable, Resy, or SevenRooms), taking bookings, confirming future reservations, and noting any guest allergies or special requests.
  • Skillfully orchestrate the dining room floor by strategically assigning tables to guests, considering server sections, party size, and guest preferences to ensure a smooth service flow.
  • Manage the waitlist during peak service hours, providing accurate wait time estimates and keeping waiting guests informed and comfortable.
  • Escort guests to their tables, present menus in a professional manner, and ensure they are settled before introducing them to their server.
  • Answer the restaurant's phone lines with professional etiquette, handling inquiries, taking messages, and directing calls appropriately.
  • Communicate effectively and act as a liaison between guests, servers, bussers, and kitchen staff regarding table status, wait times, and guest needs.
  • Maintain a thorough knowledge of the restaurant's menu, including daily specials, beverage offerings, and ingredients, to answer guest questions confidently.
  • Thank guests as they depart, inquiring about their experience and inviting them to return to create a lasting positive final impression.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming host stand, lobby, and entrance area, ensuring it is presentable and free of clutter at all times.
  • Observe the dining room and guest activity to anticipate needs and assist the service team in providing a seamless experience.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with processing, packaging, and handing off takeout and delivery orders, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Support service staff during busy periods by helping to clear and reset tables, refill water glasses, or deliver bread service.
  • Handle initial guest concerns or complaints with empathy and poise, resolving issues when possible and escalating to a manager when necessary.
  • Manage the coat check system, ensuring guest belongings are stored securely and returned promptly.
  • Update table statuses within the POS or reservation system in real-time to maintain an accurate floor map for seating.
  • Assist with light opening and closing duties for the front-of-house, such as organizing menus, checking restroom cleanliness, and preparing the host stand for service.
  • Build a rapport with regular guests, acknowledging them by name and remembering their preferences to foster loyalty.
  • Inform management of any guest feedback, positive or negative, to contribute to continuous service improvement.
  • Adhere to and uphold all restaurant policies, safety procedures, and service standards, acting as a role model for professionalism.

  • Point of Sale (POS) Systems: Familiarity with operating POS terminals for order entry or payment processing (for takeout).

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of experience. This is often an excellent entry-level position for those looking to start a career in the restaurant industry.
