Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diligently receive, unload, and process all incoming freight from delivery trucks and courier services, ensuring safe handling of all merchandise.
  • Meticulously verify incoming shipments by comparing packing slips and manifests against company purchase orders to confirm quantities, item numbers, and product specifications.
  • Accurately and promptly enter all received merchandise data into the inventory management system (IMS) using RF scanners and computer terminals.
  • Inspect all deliveries for damages, defects, or shortages; document any discrepancies and initiate the claims process with vendors and freight carriers.
  • Efficiently sort, ticket, and stage merchandise for stocking, ensuring products are prepped and ready for immediate placement on the sales floor.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and highly organized receiving area, dock, and backstock storage, adhering to all company safety protocols and standards.
  • Operate material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, hand trucks, and, if certified, forklifts to move and store inventory safely.
  • Collaborate closely with the inventory control team to resolve any receiving-related discrepancies and ensure system-wide inventory accuracy.
  • Prepare and manage outbound shipments, including vendor returns (RTVs), transfers to other store locations, and customer orders, ensuring proper packaging and documentation.
  • Break down and organize cardboard, plastics, and other packing materials for recycling and disposal, maintaining a sustainable workflow.
  • Monitor and manage receiving supplies, such as labels, box cutters, and packing tape, and notify management when reordering is necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with store management, sales associates, and vendors regarding shipment status, delays, and product availability.
  • Prioritize the processing of high-demand or promotional merchandise to support sales initiatives and marketing campaigns.
  • Use problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues with shipments, such as incorrect labeling, missing documentation, or carrier errors.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in conducting regular cycle counts and full physical inventory audits to reconcile stock levels and maintain data integrity.
  • Support the sales floor team with stock replenishment and locating merchandise from the backroom during peak business hours.
  • Train and mentor new stock associates on proper receiving procedures, safety standards, and use of inventory management tools.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions for enhancing receiving efficiency and accuracy.
  • Manage the documentation and filing of all receiving paperwork, including bills of lading, packing lists, and discrepancy reports, for auditing purposes.
  • Coordinate with the security/loss prevention team to monitor incoming and outgoing goods and prevent shrinkage.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Inventory Management Software: Proficiency with systems like SAP, NetSuite, Oracle, or other retail-specific inventory platforms.
  • RF Scanner Operation: Skilled in using handheld radio frequency scanners for data capture and inventory tracking.
  • Data Entry: Fast and accurate typing skills for inputting shipment details and updating inventory records.
  • Material Handling Equipment: Experience operating manual pallet jacks and hand trucks; forklift certification is a significant plus.
  • Microsoft Office Suite: Competency in using MS Excel for tracking and reporting, and MS Outlook for communication.
  • Shipping/Receiving Procedures: Strong understanding of logistics documentation, including Bills of Lading (BOL), packing slips, and purchase orders.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's degree or vocational certificate in a related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
